COULD my MAC lipstick Obsession be back?
Whirl is just one of the MAC shades Kylie J has attested to using way before she launched her own Lip Kits
It has been quite a while since I allowed myself to purchase a new MAC lipstick given the number of tubes I’ve amassed and have not been able to finish up (though I have been purging continuously!). It’s just that finally, I’ve caught on the brown lip trend. I’ve actually been enticed since I went counter hopping and was able to try brown/taupe-ish lipsticks by Deborah Milano. They were a bit too 90s for my taste then so I gave it a pass but when I tried Whirl during the week it was released for The Matte Lip Collection last year, I was converted.
Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), it was sold out everywhere! I think that was June 2015.. it’s now March 2016. I only took the plunge finally last month. So imagine, that has been almost 9 months of self-control. Fine, I had to say no to it only thrice when I found counters that carried it (once in MAC Glorietta, once in Shang and another in the Thai airport duty free). So yeah, I can definitely say this is one of my ‘most thought about’ purchases… ever. For a tube of lipstick, I know right? #DontJudge #YouGetMe
The Original Kylie Lip
MAC must partly thank the Kylie Jenner for helping propel this shade to SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE territory. Because of her announcement that she uses the lipliner version of this lipstick as well as Soar – in a matter of days (or maybe one), those two seemed to have flown off the shelves almost immediately. Hence, it didn’t last even a day here in the Philippines when it launched. Even the replenishments don’t seem to even touch the display shelves. INSANE. So when I finally found a tube in our local Duty Free, I grabbed it. No more thinking.
So what is with this matte rosy brown shade that had all the girls all over the world head over heels over it? (Is that some sort of stupid question, Shari? Three words. Kylie Jenner DUH). Besides that, I think it’s because the shade is a chameleon. Kind of like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that magically fits you.
It’s not exactly super brown which makes it the ultimate transition shade if you’re still quite hesitant to sport the 90s lip trend. It has enough rosy pink tones to prevent it from becoming a full-on brown. However, to get the Kylie lip, you have to consider your own lip color because this looks different on everyone depending on the original shade of your lips. On my quite pigmented lips, it registers darker and browner than I expected. I wanted it to be a tiny bit lighter and taupier.
I guess I also expected some major plumping action but let’s face it, those Kylie J lips didn’t come from lip liner magic~. I’m sorry, I refuse to believe that she didn’t have injections.
I’ve also tried the lip liner version of this which is a hell of a lot drier – not to say that this lipstick version isn’t drying because it is as well. You really have to make sure you exfoliate before applying this – otherwise, every flake will surface and come to life. It holds up pretty well when eating and drinking, though.
I can not capture the real shade in tube so sry bbz.
I probably should’ve included swatches of other rosy-pink shades like Mehr, Brave, Faux but they are too pink and can’t really compare. I’ve seen comparisons of this with Velvet Teddy but Velvet Teddy is too peachy/nude for me to even compare it to Whirl. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge, I’m reviewing a cheaper “dupe” of this soon so hang around and check back to see which one it is! *hint* I’ve posted it on my Twitter (@themistymom) and Snapchat (@smariemac).
