Canon G7X

My new blogging best friend
I’ve long been on the hunt for a camera to complement my trusty Canon 5D Mark II which I use for the blog. I absolutely have no qualms on the quality of the camera — heck, I saved up for it, keeping a blind eye on the latest Chanel collections just so I could upgrade! But lugging it around during events (all 1.1kg of it with the lens on!) has pushed me to look into a more purse-friendly option that won’t have me losing a shoulder when I’m out the whole day. I’ve also been meaning to reincarnate my Youtube channel, mostly to make video blogs for events and out-of-town trips.
So off to Google I go and after a few days (yes, I spent that much time) of research, I found that the best camera for these ‘needs’ is none other than the Canon G7X. It’s reportedly also used as a “vlogging” camera by the most popular Youtubers such as Zoella, That’s Heart, Nikki Philippi, Alfie Deyes, etc. I just recently attended a beauty event this week and when I whipped out my new baby, the Youtube beauty vloggers almost in unison cried out, “Wow, the G7X – that’s the ultimate vlogging camera!” Paired with words of encouragement, “You should start vlogging, Shari!” Maybe I will.
Disclaimer: If you’re looking for a more technical, in-depth review of this camera, I urge you to google it. I’ll only be sharing my thoughts on this as a blogger/non-pro photographer/serial Instagrammer!
This 180-degree flip out screen is perfect for beauty bloggers who shoot ‘selfies’ on a daily basis!
Beautiful Image Quality
My number one priority when it comes to camera is image quality. My first question is always – does it take sharp, non-pixelated, true-to-color photos? The G7X has an aperture (the depth of field that produces the bokeh effect) of 1.8! I’m used to working with a Canon 50mm with an aperture of 1.4 (the smaller this number is, the more bokeh-licious the photo). While the G7X doesn’t produce the same bokeh effect, especially when the subject is farther from the lens, it takes beautiful, crisp images even in dark, low-light situations because of its large sensor.
Getting that perfect “close up” photo is easier. I also personally love the macro mode which enables me to shoot closely and focus on let’s say, the imprint on Tom Ford lipsticks, softly blurring the background. I couldn’t achieve this with my dSLR as I use a prime 50mm lens and can’t zoom in so I’m ecstatic that I can now zoom in on beauty products I shoot more. Yes, we all need to see the microshimmer on those Guerlain meteorites up close.

Stepping up my Flatlay Game. Because of its 24-100mm lens, I can easily concoct the perfect flatlay photos for Instagram and the blog. The touch-screen feature allows you to easily touch on the area you’d like to focus. Depending on the mood of your Instagram feed, you also have a choice of filters which you can shoot in.
Built-in Filters for a VSCO feel. I like that the camera has filters you can choose to shoot in if you find the auto mode too ‘boring’, ‘bright’, etc. depending on your mood. You have the choice of shooting in High Dynamic Range, Nostalgic, Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Background Defocus, Soft Focus, Monochrome, Super Vivid, Poster Effect. There’s also a dedicated feature for stargazers – namely the Star Portrait, Star Nightscape, Star Trails, Star Time-Lapse Movie.
Flawless Video Capture
This camera makes “homemade videos” instantly look like professionally-made films. I swear, the HD quality is perfect. It shoots in 60 fps, which even beats the shooting speed of some dSLRS. The most important thing, it’s steady as heck!! I could be riding at the back of a motorcycle holding on for dear life (I actually did last weekend!), and it still films sans the shake and the rattle – as if I were standing still! If someone asks for my number, tell them they can call me… amazed and impressed.
I would definitely be putting the video capabilities of these to waste if I don’t start making videos. So I actually already have one coming up — I’ll be uploading a travel VLOG (of last weekend’s shenanigans) next week where I used this camera alone for all my photos and videos during that trip. I’m so excited to share it! Currently still editing it.
Camera to Phone in an Instant!
One other thing I absolutely love about this camera? The wi-fi connectivity! It has built-in wireless capabilities and Near Field Communication (NFC) support which allows you to instantly download the photos and videos to your smartphone using the Canon Camera Connect App. During the trip, my sister, my friend and I were able to instantly upload our photos, all taken with the G7X, on Instagram.
Yes, I’m stepping up my Instagram game, thanks to this camera! Ever since I started using the G7X for photos on Instagram, my “what camera do you use” queries have also been increasing. It definitely goes to show that there is a marked difference from when I used the built-in iPhone cam to when I switched to using this. I personally didn’t think there’d be such a change because I post-process the same way, but I was wrong and the influx of email inquiries proves this.
Sample Photos
It has a wider view and it’s not this close up when holding it an arm’s length away. I just had to crop my pits out of this photo because I haven’t waxed yet, ha ha ha!
It has the subtle bokeh effect when taking product shots… win!
I’ll be posting a full entry on our out-of-town trip soon with photos all taken with this camera so watch out for that!
Final Thoughts
The Canon G7X is the perfect camera for those who are either looking for a companion for their bulky dSLRS, eager to get started on video blogging or those who want to step up their Instagram and blog photos game with beautiful dSLR-like image quality. With the built-in wifi that instantly connects to your smartphones via the Canon Connect app, this camera is now something I can not leave the house without. The only downside I encountered is the battery life – I was so used to my SLR’s battery life of 4 days (even more if rarely used) that I felt like I’d need 2 spare batteries for this camera when travelling.
Let’s just say that I fell so in love with this camera that I even forgot I had a 5D! If you’re eager to try this, go to a Canon store (or any camera shop that carries it) to try it for yourself. You may check out the features and price on the Canon website and purchase original Canon items at (which is in partnership with Lazada). You may also check out Canon’s Facebook page filled with beautiful photos shared by the brand as well as promos you can take advantage of!

Ahhh! Photos are so nice <3 I've been meaning to get a new camera and have been eyeing on the Fujifilm X-A2. Now I'm torn between the Fuji and this!

If you want to do videos, this has an edge over the Fujifilm. But for photos, the XA-2 has the edge cos you can buy more lens for it! It’s a lot bulkier than the G7X, though. Also, I’m a Canon gal forever so I’m super happy with this one!

Woot! Do try it and see if it fits your needs! I find it a great companion to a dSLR. I still use my dSLR, if needed but most of the time, I can rely on this na lang 🙂

    How much is this camera?

  5. October 4, 2015 / 8:40 am

This is perfect for traveling. I usually use my Fuji X-M1 for blogging but it’s too bulky to bring it whenever I travel. Thank you for pointing this camera out Shari. 🙂

Congrats on your new camera! Now I want one too..waah!

  7. October 5, 2015 / 11:41 am

I was checking out some cameras (casually muna for now!), and the SA pointed this exact one out to me. 🙂

Haha, this camera was actually brought to my attention by Louis (Fun For Louis) since he uses it to vlog too! I’ve also been thinking about getting this for a while now since I get so lazy lugging around different lenses with me when I’m travelling, but buying new cameras ain’t cheap! I’ve been debating between this and the g16–apparently the g16 has a larger zoom range, but it doesn’t have a flip out screen, which obviously makes it difficult to selfie 😛

Your photos look promising! ❤️ I like the minimalist feel. 🙂 Anyway, I’m currently using Canon 600d, it’s pretty much an entry-level SLR but I was really sold on its swivel and tilt LCD screen. The catch though is it doesn’t have a built-in wifi capability. *sobs*
I’ve been eyeing the fujifilm X-A2 for the same reason that it has this flip-out screen + wireless connectivity too. Now, I’m torn between these two! Haha

I am so sold on this camera. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and I am definitely going to purchase it in the very near future. Love your blog! This is my first time visiting. I came across it as I was googling images of the Canon G7x. 🙂
