Powder-puff Girl

Mat Magique All-in-One Matte Transforming Powder
Phew! That was a mouthful. I’m sure you’ve seen this powder do its rounds on the local beauty blogging scene. But what is it really and what are its claims that prove to be true? First, it’s all-in-one meaning you don’t need additional primer, foundation or SPF – you’ve got all of that in this compact. Personally, I still apply separate sunscreen because I think you don’t get all the SPF you need with just foundation/powder as you don’t liberally apply as much.
As for the primer and foundation part – well, it definitely has you covered. The powder can be used wet and dry – depending on the coverage you need. If you need medium coverage, you can use the powder as is. But if you need full coverage, you can dampen your brush or sponge a little before dipping into the powder. The powder is soft and smooth, quite finely-milled as compare to most drugstore powders but after I’ve dampened it with water, it tends to harden a bit and becomes rough right after. I thought I ruined it forever~ but then after a day or two, it goes back to its regular state.

I used the powder damp but not built up to full coverage because I didn’t want to look “super made up”. It can definitely be built up to that point, though, as I saw how it was solely used for all the ladies who were in the photoshoot launch. The best thing I like about this powder is its finish — a smooth, non-cakey matte. You can’t see any of the powder sitting on top of your skin, it looks like it’s one with your skin.
As for the 12-hour no-shine claim? I could only go up to 10 hours – the longest time I wore it – and I think the photo above needs no explanation? My eyeliner (or mascara?) has smudged, my lipstick and blush have faded but I’m still surprisingly oil-free. Do note that the powder has faded on the areas around my nose and mouth, though.
Final Thoughts
I think this is a great oil-control powder for those who are oily and combination-skinned and don’t want to have to keep on retouching repeatedly throughout the day. I haven’t researched thoroughly on volcanic perlite (although there is also very little info on it on the Net) but from what I’ve gathered, it acts as a sponge to absorb all the excess oil from the skin. It’s currently big in the hydroponics industry because  of its neutral PH and water-absorbing features. Being a liquid foundation user, I like using this as a finishing powder because it doesn’t completely mattify my ‘dewy’ finish given the right amount – but it still keeps me oil-free the whole day! For only PHP 499 ($11), this is definitely a steal! Just look beyond the plastic fuschia packaging….
I’ve two extra Mat Magiques to give away so just comment why you want to try the Mat Magique powder below! Winners will be announced next week so don’t forget to check back here.

Will definitely pick this up when I hit pan on my VMV oil absorbing powder. I’ve been looking for a more affordable alternative to my VMV one so I’m really happy you reviewed this product! Hopefully it works well for my skin too. 🙂

This sounds pretty great! Having oily-combo skin myself, I’m always after a powder that will control oil, but I’m really not a fan of the overly matte or powdered look! It’s lasted amazingly on your skin!

Ter your review, I really want to try this now. I have combination skin. My nose and forehead are syper oily but the tops of my cheeks are quite dry. I need something that keeps me oil free but not cling to dry patches. I haven’t found a powder that really last me a long time. Not even MAC Studio Fix powder. After just about 3 hours I start oiling up and it’s such a hassle to touch up. Really need find a great powder that can keep me nice and shine free. I can’t really carry around a powder compact in my clutch during prom. Sighhh oily girl probs.

I hope that you can review the new Maybelline powder as well! 🙂 and I spotted your tripod there in the back. 😉

I’m a fan of powder foundation for quick makeup and the pressed form is very convenient for travel! I’ve had good luck finding a color match in L’Oreal foundations so hopefully there will be one in this powder too 😀

Hi Ms. Shari! Love reading your blogs and your review about this new L’oreal Mat Magique transforming powder. I would love to try this because I have very oily skin and has some pimple marks which made me feel unattractive 🙁 Most of my powders does not stay more than 3 hours on my face. I just gave birth recently and as a first time mom, you want the best for your child. Sometimes I don’t have anymore time to beautify myself because my time is always focus and look after my child. I find it difficult to maintain a fresh face throughout the day. For me, I want to have a powder that lasts longer and I want to gain back my confidence in facing people. I believe that this new L’oreal Mat Magique powder is the answer to my problem. I hope that you pick me as this will be my best valentine gift from you. I believe that this powder may help keep my face clean, matte and look fresh longer. I want to have a smooth, shine free and oil free face this year and so on. Thank you for this chance 🙂 #BelieveInMagique

This sounds incredible! I would love to try this as I have been on the hunt for a great, low maintenance powder foundation and this one sounds incredible! I definitely can get quite oily throughout the day, so this is a match made in heaven it seems.

I have super oily skin that is a nightmare to dress up. I need to really invest in the makeup I buy just so it lasts, especially because I have super-long days as a student in law school. I really need to try this to see if there’s a worthy drugstore brand that can handle my skin!

    • February 13, 2015 / 7:16 pm

Hi Lui! Law school is extremely hard – let me send you a powder to freshen you up when you feel icky after 300+ pages of cases. Let me know your MAC shade and your shipping address. Send them at shari@themistymom.com

  22. February 6, 2015 / 6:42 pm

Just trying my luck 😡 I want to try this Mat Magique from l’Oreal because I’m amazed that it can last up to 10 hours. I’ve tried many powder foundations (mostly from mid-range brands), and I’ve never met one that can last for more than 6 hours. I have combination oily dry skin so it’s really hard to find a holy grail foundation.

This L’Oreal Mat Magique is so lovely even the packaging itself! This powder looks promising which makes me want to try it. I also have been planning to buy a new powder for weeks now and your blog has given me an idea on what to grab on the beauty shop. I have one ordeal though, buying stuff for myself lately has become a guilty pleasure for me. Siguro kasi when you’re already a mom, you always buy stuff for the house, pay bills, buy stuff for the family, you always think of your loved ones and ang ending wala nang natirang budget for yourself. At mapapa “next time nlang…(sigh)” nlang ako sa sarili ko.. I really wanna win this, para nman I Will not only feel good, but also look good. I have a really oily face and I just haven’t found the right powder for myself. I also wanted to look fresh and young. I am so excited na to try that one and looking forward na mas mag-gain ako ng confidence about my appearance. Thank you

It sounds so nice! I have no idea if they’re going to launch it here in Italy, they’re quite random with what and when we get products 😉 xx

I don’t think the oil control is good. My skin is only combi but it left my forehead and cheeks shiny in about 3 hours..

  28. March 24, 2015 / 1:24 am

Ahhhh! Shari! I used to follow you on blogger and then suddenly I realized that I’ve not seen any of your new posts for many months! Just found you again! I don’t know what happened but I’m glad you didn’t just disappear as I feared for a moment! Ugh, I’m dying to try this powder actually! I love the packaging and I’ve had great luck with their true match powder. This is double the price in singapore but I’m sure it’s as good as you say, I love pressed powders and go through them so fast! My favorite currently and for years has been from ZA but I must try this one or the BB one from l’oreal!
