Bobbi Brown Week: Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink Review + Giveaway

bobbi-brown-gel-liner Ahhh, a cult favorite! The Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner isn’t raved about in the beauty world for nothing. It introduced me to the world of eyeliners that are matte jet black, smudge-proof and long-lasting. Pre-Bobbi Brown gel liner, I was stuck with eyeliner pencils that transferred, smeared and just gave me raccoon eyes midday. Join me in bidding adieu to those kinds of eyeliners, yes? bobbi-brown-gel-liner2 bobbi-brown-gel-liner3 So you want to graduate from pencils that fade, smudge or transfer midday? But there are also liquid liners, Shari. Personally, I like liquid liners, especially for hooded eyes like mine. They go on really thin (some even 0.1mm) and last longer than eyeliner pencils with no smudge/transfer. But then most I’ve tried are particularly glossy – not to mention a bit hard to manoeuvre on the eyes because I have to have steady hands to create the perfect line. Gel liners need not be applied in such a rigid or strict manner because you use an eyeliner brush (for those that come in pots) which is easier to work with – as you can apply in small strokes without worrying too much about making a mess. I don’t know how to illustrate this properly! You’ll know what I mean when you try it, I guess. Gel liner users, back me up here. Moving along, Bobbi Brown Black Ink is a creamy kind of gel eyeliner that just glides on your lids ever so smoothly. You can smudge it in the first 10-15 seconds, but after that it sets and doesn’t budge ’til you take it off at night. I’ve tried MAC Blacktrack and while it is equally as impressive, I stand by Black Ink because it has a little more firmness to it making it more pliable and thus easier to apply. bobbi-brown-gel-liner4Bbobbi-brown-gel-liner5 bobbi-brown-gel-liner8 It is thin, lightweight and has good, opaque pigmentation. Don’t mind the uneven strokes I made above, I was using a new eyeliner brush from Sigma and couldn’t maneuver it well because it was too ‘floppy’. Prior to this, I used the Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush on my original pot and that was stiffer and not too all over the place. In terms of pigmentation, MAC Blacktrack is undoubtedly more jet black and striking so if you want that kind of strong black, Black Ink may underwhelm you as it is on a softer black level. I usually do two layers to get an opaque, even black finish. I actually prefer it this way because if I do make mistakes in the process, it wouldn’t be too difficult to correct or erase. I may have lost my shit with another gel eyeliner a few weeks back when I had to erase a mistake and ended up almost wounding my eye. bobbi-brown-gel-liner6 bobbi-brown-gel-liner7 A caveat, if you have extremely oily lids though, this may smudge a bit on you – so best to apply a mattifying lid primer whether or not you’re putting on eye makeup. Also, without primer, this fades into a greyish black after 7-8 hours. The main concern I and many others have experienced as well is the drying up. I think my first pot lasted 10 months before it finally hardened, but still with a significantly usable amount left when it did. When this dries up, that’s when it becomes a pain to apply and you’re left thinking “what a waste“. Well ladies, I think I may have found a solution to this (which I use on my MAC brow gelcreme as well) which I’ve seen on Pinterest a while back. Just drop a tiny, tiny amount of argan oil (not sure if you can use other oils, but argan works) into the pot and mix it in there with a clean brush. Voila, back to being creamy in an instant! Not so sure if it remains as smudge-proof because there’s oil in there, but hey, at least it’s salvaged and usable again! Also, what I like about this gel liner is how it doesn’t budge when I curl my lashes before mascara application. Usually, when the curler touches my lashline (where the liner sits), be it gel or liquid, most eyeliners smudge or flake and I’d have to touch up or reapply afterwards. Black Ink is an immovable force. I tell you, when it sets, it frikkin’ sets. No eyelash curler or fingers can move it. If you haven’t yet tried any gel liners, or if you have but are “meh, it’s k” about it – give this one a try first before completely dismissing gel liners for good.

The only black gel eyeliner in a pot that I have tried so far is Laura Mercier’s. Would love to compare it with this. Woot! Woot for the giveaway! 🙂

This is my first ever gel liner and boy did it set my expectations high. No other gel liners I tried after that compared to this one and I tried many. Super opaque black line in just one swipe, doesn’t smudge even after a sweaty pilates class and it actually stays on my waterline for a few hours, and that’s a feat! Hands down my all time favourite 🙂

I’m not a fan of liquid liners. It’s pencil (the auto, no-sharpening one, please!) or gel for me. I like something I can build up gradually that comes on thick. I think I like feeling the “weight” of it.

The day I bought my first one, I already started planning on how to make it last longer. Might get Inglot Duraline or try argan oil. (Perhaps argan oil first, since I already have a bottle of it here.)

I would definitely say that Blacktrack is my absolute favorite. My pot’s drying up (already have a back-up) and since I’m a Scrooge (lie!) what i did to scrimp was put a few drops of Human Nature’s sunflower oil. It started transferring though. since it was so creamy. Had to start setting it with some black shadow. So I would say that you should try it with your Brow Gelcreme and Argan Oil but be cautious of how much you put! 🙂

I’ve been only seeing nothing but rave reviews on this gel eyeliner! I was lucky enough to discover a super awesome gel eyeliner by Kate when I was about 6 months into wearing make up and it really was my love for a whole year! I used to wear gel eyeliner every single day! But now I use liquid and keep gels for the beach or days when I’m going to be adventuring around!

    ok ok THOSE EYESHADOWS. awesome.

yea when i was deciding on which gel liner, it always seemed like the world was divided b/w the bobbi brown and the mac one. i went for the mac and it has served me well since (there’s still tons left) so i probably won’t be switching for a while.

I’ve always used eye liner pencils because I find it much more easier to put but your review about the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner made me think twice. I’m definitely planning to try this out!

This gel liner has been a long-time favorite! Wish I can try it soon. I’m in dire need of a new one! 🙂

I’ve used rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol to revive my gel liners. They haven’t changed in formula or performance so if you’re worried about changing the formula, try the isopropyl alcohol!

Thanks for the argan oil tip! Mine is becoming really dry so I’ll definitely try it! 😀 MAC Blacktrack is blacker than this? Very well then! I shall own it! Haha. I love me some serious black eyeliners. ^_^ I don’t have the smudging problem with the Bobbi Brown one, though. It stays on so put that I sometimes use it to tightline! 🙂

  14. September 24, 2014 / 10:54 am

What brush do you use for gel liners in pots? I’m on my 2nd pot of MAC Blacktrack now but I don’t get to use it as often as I’d like to since I don’t have the proper brush for it! 🙁 (I lost the brush that came with my first pot)

  15. September 24, 2014 / 7:41 pm

Sounds like an eyeliner made for me! I’m hooded, and I don’t like super black liners.

I think this could be my answer for my raccoon eyes when I apply liquid eyeliner.

I super fail at liquid liners. I have monolids and it’s really hard for me to apply liner without it getting “eaten” by my lids. In the end, hindi siya kita. 🙁 This looks nice though. And Bobbi’s quite famous for her gel liners.
