Down the Drugstore Aisle

Who sez I only buy/use makeup that pave the way to bankruptcy? (!!!) Deep down, I’m a sucker for budget buys, too. Nothing excites me more than discovering treasures in the drugstore aisles that cost 10x less than high-end. Especially when, upon using, you learn that they work equally as well as their counterparts (with some even outperforming them exxxys). In this post, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on a few of those drugstore products I tried and — loved, liked or wasn’t particularly crazy about.

FS Cosmetics Eyeshadow Singles (review). During one of my drugstore dashes, I chanced upon these singles that were on sale for Php150 each, instead of Php195. Though the textures of the shades vary — there are a select few that were smoother and have above average color pay-off than the rest. They come in a whopping amount of 4 grams, too! Not that I’ve ever finished a single eyeshadow pan in my lifetime yet, but talk about bang for your buck. Overall, love. But a very selective kind of love when it comes to FS eyeshadows in general. Essence Mono Eyeshadow in Party All Night. Spent a good 20 minutes in an Essence counter swatching all their products and stumbled upon this beautiful golden taupe shade in the process. Some of the Essence shadows were poorly pigmented and quite dry or super powdery but like FS cosmetics, there are some gems to be found as well. Party All Night is creamy with a satin-y sheen and catches light beautifully. Downside is, it may be a little too creamy as it accentuates my crepe-y lids. Avon Supershock Mascara. I find this volumizing, but not in a major VA-VA-VOLUME kind of way. It stays put all day without smudging or transferring, which I like. Plus, removal is easy and won’t leave you panda-eyed. Downside is it doesn’t hold my curls all that well.

Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation*. A lightweight, medium coverage liquid foundation that sets to a velvety finish. It doesn’t have a pump so that’s the downside (but then if that’s what keeps it at an affordable price, I won’t complain more) and it moves around a bit before it finally sets. It also gets cakey when built up more than it should be. Longevity is good but not great — I usually go with a primer beneath and setting powder on top to improve wear time. Overall, for its price point, it’s a good foundation but nothing amazing. Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. I find this a tad more pigmented than NARS, but a bit more drying while at it. For Php 299 though, this is a heavy duty concealer you can’t go wrong with.

Ellana Minerals Blush Duo in Light Roast and Butter Rum Coffee*. Ahhh, a very affordable option for instant Kardashian cheekbones. I’ve professed my love for this on one too many posts already so I’ll stop. Finely milled, easily blendable. I can’t recommend this no-brainer contouring/highlighting duo, especially for those intimidated by the thought of it. Tony Moly Crystal Blusher in Bronze Brown. Bought this bronzing blush way back and I found it a wee bit orange-y so I don’t contour or bronze with it, I wear it as a blush instead. This won “Best Bronzer” in a top Korea beauty show called “Get it Beauty”. So maybe it works as a bronzer/contour for the really pale-skinned. Quality is really good, though. I find it smooth and easily blendable, with lasting power of well over 6 hours.

Maybelline Fashion Brow Mascara*. I’ve loved this brow mascara since I first received it and my love just grows and grows each day I wear it. The wand makes coating the brow hairs easily and it deposits just the right amount of tint on them as well. I can’t think of any downsides for this product, to be honest. I’m even thinking of buying backups. Majolica Majorca Brow Customize (not in photo). A twist-up brow pencil that does the job of filling in brows in a very soft, subtle way. It doesn’t register stark at all, so Frida Kahlo brows are out of the picture. Also, you can just buy the refill when you’ve finished up your first one.

Revlon Super Lustrous Shine Lipsticks. I find these really easy to wear for every day, as well as in a formula that doesn’t dry out my lips. Those looking for pigmentation will not find it in these, though as these are very sheer. drugstore makeup budget pinaydrugstore makeup budget pinay That’s it for this version of Budget Beauty, folks! I’ve a few more drugstore goodies to share, but I’m keeping it to 10 products at a time because I don’t want to put any of you to sleep (unless it’s bedtime and you’re feeling bouts of insomnia, then I’m here to help! LOL).

HA for a moment i though the F5 palette was one of the city ysl palettes. i was like ‘drugstore?!?!?! let me at it!!!”

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:02 pm

LOL!! They do look somewhat like the YSL palettes with no cover on, eh? :)) But ya know, I’m a RKOI and YSL is drugstore to me :))

  2. July 12, 2014 / 8:39 pm

    Very pretty, Shari!
I’m not familiar with the eyeshadow quad but for a sec I thought it was a tom ford!
My ds favorites includes many L’Oreal products. The original voluminous mascara wp and Wet Shine Stain, etc. 🙂

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:03 pm

The palette is actually by a local brand which is why it’s unfamiliar, Lena 🙂 I shall try the Voluminous mascara, thanks to your reco btw! 🙂

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:03 pm

Woww,a very interesting post Shari!! thanks a lot for the awesome share! I know these products are good coming from your thoughts :))) I really wanna try the Revlon foundation <3

    love lots,

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:13 pm

Thanks, Tine! The Revlon foundation is good, but not as high in coverage. If you have pretty good skin though, it works well in evening it out and being lightweight (no cakey feeling!) 🙂

I want that brow mascara! :(( Haven’t been to Watson’s or anything for a while now. School stress and all that jazz. And why does the Collection concealer always have to be sold out?? Ugh.

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:15 pm

      Thanks Zoe!

  5. July 13, 2014 / 5:05 am

Stunning picks, Shari! Those FS single shadows look beautiful- very NARS like 🙂

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:15 pm

The shadows are from a local brand so they aren’t available anywhere else 🙁 But they’re so cheap and work well – do try the Essence ones!

  6. July 13, 2014 / 10:27 am

Awesome picks! I love the Collection concealer too. It’s great for its affordable price. My favorite drugstore loose powder is the Essence Cosmetics translucent loose powder. It keeps my oily skin at bay for practically the whole day (rhyming skillz lol). :3

I love Essence’s Mono Eyeshadows. I have a green one (kermit says hello) & a purple one. The purple one just had to go because of how chalky and stiff it was. Great picks! x

    • July 22, 2014 / 12:37 pm

I have to find that green one!! I don’t have a green eyeshadow yet !! 🙂

  9. July 13, 2014 / 3:34 pm

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:43 pm

Hit-or-miss yung Essence eyeshadows but there are some gems 😉 happy hunting!!! Hehe.

  14. July 14, 2014 / 8:27 am

I have yet to try FS eyeshadows, will definitely buy a couple the next time I see it. and Im super interested to try the Maybelline Fashion Brow Mascara. Haven’t tried the essence eyeshadow either, there’s no Essence brand yet here in Cebu eh. will have to buy them when I go to Manila in a few months.

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:44 pm

No Essence in Cebu yet? But meron SM Cebu right? Wala sa beauty section? 🙁
The Maybelline Fashion Brow mascara is such a joy to use!! Ang dali niya mag-coat ng hairs 🙂

  15. July 14, 2014 / 10:30 am

I want to swatch all of Essence eyeshadows too! Catrice Cosmetics is here na rin pala Shari. Hehe

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:44 pm

Catrice is here?!?!?! Shucks just saw this now. WHERE DO I GO!? Wait super naexcite lang ako. Thanks for the heads up Nikki! Will wait for your reply :))

      • July 31, 2014 / 2:41 pm

All I know is it’s beside Essence in SM Manila. I found out from Say Artillero’s blog. I’ve yet to visit SM Makati to find out if it’s also available there.

  16. July 14, 2014 / 1:31 pm

And you still look so classy even if you’re wearing budget makeup! P.S. is it just me or did your skin get even better-er since your short blogging hiatus?!

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:47 pm

Wow naman, thanks gurl! 🙂 #FLATTERED
Anyway, my skin’s kinda the same naman, just thankfully managed the breakouts. And my acne marks lightened thanks to the Bobbi serum I used. Super galing lang. I thought I had to resort to peels na eh 🙁

        August 15, 2015 / 8:02 pm

What bobbi serum you use to lighten ackne marks? Thanks

  17. July 14, 2014 / 7:38 pm

I can imagine that bronzer working for my very yellow skin. It won’t appear THAT orange. But as a contour powder, no can do.

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:48 pm

Yah, it’s more a bronzer than a contour powder nga. Pang Korean skin lang kaya maging contour.

  18. July 15, 2014 / 4:30 am

I have tried most of these except the brow mascara & pencil. I agree that these products perform well, with some improvements. I usually use the tony moly bronzer as a transition shade for my eyes to make it warmer because I think it doesn’t last long on my cheeks. Hehe 🙂

    • July 31, 2014 / 12:48 pm

Ooooh I shall try to use the Tony Moly bronzer for that purpose nga! THANK YOU for the suggestion 🙂 Galing!!
