MSBB a.k.a My Skin But Better

During the past few months, I have mentioned over and over that I’ve been battling an onslaught of breakouts from an oil cleanser experiment gone wrong. While I haven’t been in a confident mood to take face photos of myself wearing blushes or anything that’ll show my cheeks, I’ve realized that at least I can make use of this bad skin to test base products. I’ve contemplated many times over of posting my bare face with all the battle scars but whatever, for the sake of beauty, here goes! I’ve recently been gifted a bottle of Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation* from a Bobbi Brown event I attended a few weeks ago. We had the chance to choose which of the brand’s foundations we get to take home and among all the amazing choices, I chose to go with this lightweight base that’s rumored to be Kate Middleton’s favorite Bobbi Brown foundation.Β

Skin Foundation is oil-free and offers weightless light-medium coverage. I would say that it verges more on light but covers better than most tinted moisturizers. Coverage can be built up to medium without the cake. Absolutely no clinging to dry patches or flakies, too. It reminds me of MAC Face & Body Foundation which I’ve only sampled twice – but I feel they have the same consistency with Bobbi offering more coverage than MAC. bobbi brown skin foundation

Skin Foundation has a very thin and watery consistency. Not too watery that it drips all over, but runny enough that one pump covers almost all my face (although I use two pumps to do one full layer). As such, it blends really easily that IΒ usually use just my fingers to apply this but I’ve also been getting good results from using the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.Β I’m quite amazed that such a thin consistency gives very good coverage. The Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is much thicker, yet has lighter coverage than this.

Skin Foundation can’t cover up intense acne scarring or marks, for that, additional concealer is necessary. It is able to conceal redness and minor blemishes if built up though, usually two full layers. The finish is a beautiful natural-looking satin that truly looks like skin. Even when built up, there is absolutely no sign of caking. Did I mention I noticed minimized pores when I wear this even when I skip on primer? Yup.

Without any primer or powder on top, Skin Foundation lasted well over 5 hours before noticeable sliding off on my T-zone. When I set the foundation with loose powder, it ploughed through 8 full hours with me. I did have to blot twice on my forehead in between those 8 hours, though, so I suggest wearing an oil-controlling primer underneath. bobbi brown skin foundation

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation is best for normal skin types without major acne problems but being on the combination side of the spectrum with battle scars in tow, I still found Skin Foundation to work well on me. As evidenced in the before and after photos, it concealed my redness and scars pretty well despite not being full coverage. The after photoΒ shows two layers of the foundation sans powder so the satin, natural-looking yet polished finish is very apparent. For those that are oily-skinned, a dusting of powder is much needed to prolong wear and prevent premature-oiling up. I believe this foundation is made for those who love their natural finishes yet don’t need much covering up. If you’re a tinted moisturizer fan but feel that coverage is lacking, this is your best bet. It’s a hydrating and moisturizing base so those with dry skin would love this as well. However, if you’re looking for a higher coverage base with a more matte finish, I would recommend the other best-selling Bobbi Brown base – their Long-Wear Even Finish foundation. All in all – being a first time user of Bobbi Brown’s foundations, I’d have to say I’m impressed! I’ve been using the Skin Foundation for weeks now since I got it and I haven’t broken out from it despite wearing it all day. In times when I feel like reaching for my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, I found myself slapping this on instead.

I have yet to try any of Bobbi Brown’s base products. Would you say this product is similar to KGD Aqua Foundation? πŸ™‚

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:20 pm

This is similar but the texture and finish are quite different. Bobbi is thinner and runnier and has a less satin finish, may dewy touch. KGD Aqua is more satin/demi-matte. It’s also thicker (though still thin in consistency but not as thin as Bobbi).

This sounds like a lovely foundation, Shari! Excellent coverage for a lightweight foundation I must say. I have MAC Face & Body and I like it OK. The coverage is a little too sheer for me (I have a lot of acne scars and hyperpigmentation). My current favorite is MUFE Face & Body! πŸ™‚ Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation is on my to-try list, maybe after I get bored with the MUFE. ^_^

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:22 pm

I want to try the MUFE Face & Body as I recently read it’s the Olsen Twins’ favorite LOL. I am a fangirl since I was 10 years old :)) I will hunt down the MUFE F&B foundation review on your blog, thanks for the suggestion Jaa!

Love Bobbi Brown’s products! She does no wrong in my eyes. I just bought the Foundation stick which has excellent reviews and is for all skin types. So far I love it! Great review

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:22 pm

Oh wow, that Foundation stick was my first choice but I ran out of my shade so I went for this. That stick is next on my list to try!!

I have tried a couple of BB foundations during makeovers/workshops, but I can’t remember which! I like how her foundations always have a bit of yellow in it. For me it works really well! I’m going to give Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet a go soon. I’m hoping it’ll be a lightweight one that’s perfect for spring/summer!

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:23 pm

I am lemming for that Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet!! Will probs be my next Chanel purchase πŸ™‚ Can’t wait to hear your thoughts when you do get it Sunny.

  5. April 2, 2014 / 7:36 pm

Sounds and looks amazing! I personally don’t need full coverage, I am very happy with med-light to medium coverage that’s buildable and the finish on this foundation is just amazing!

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:24 pm

I think your face needs very little covering, Shar!! πŸ™‚ And I personally hate full coverage foundies too because they tend to be thick and cakey πŸ™ Havent found one yet that I like. I prefer my light-medium bases mostly πŸ™‚

  6. April 2, 2014 / 8:29 pm

Oh wow!! Your foundation in the ‘after’ shot looks totally natural… “skin-but-better” indeed! For foundies, I prefer light-med coverage like this! I’m currently using up my Happy Skin SS Creme & their liquid foundie, but I really want to try this Bobbi Brown one now huhuhu. /must resist temptation…. T___T :)))

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:27 pm

I thought this would be too sheer to cover up anything initially, but was surprised that it actually does a decent job in covering that I could just lightly conceal the really dark scars/marks after foundation. I don’t like heavy bases, too (which I think is apparent in my base choices here in the blog! hihi) as they tend to be thick and cakey so this Bobbi one is a winner for me πŸ™‚

I wanna try any Happy skin base.. what do you think of their foundation & SS creme, Eiles?

      • April 8, 2014 / 8:53 pm

The SS Creme (Soft Beige) works better in terms of oil control for me. I also think it lasts longer on me than the liquid foundie (though both are long wearing). I prefer the texture of the foundie (it feels easier to spread & it doesn’t cling on some of the flakey skin I have due to drying BHA products — the SS Creme can sometimes emphasize flakies bec of the powdery finish). They offer pretty much the same coverage (sheer-medium) but I find the foundie can cover up more dark spots. I like them both but if I had to choose I’d pick the SS Creme just because I have oily skin & I don’t like retouching hehe. Btw, both bases didn’t oxidize on me so yay! I’m not really good at describing & comparing makeup so I’m sorry if I just rambled on. Also other than Happy Skin I’ve only used VMV & Human Nature face bases so I consider myself a noobie. Lol. Hope I was still able to help you somehow Shari! If you have any other questions just let me know πŸ™‚

        • April 8, 2014 / 9:00 pm

BTW I forgot to add, with the SS Creme sometimes I can get away without setting it with any powder after (especially if the weather is cool). But with the foundation I have to set it with powder talaga kasi super oil fest ang fez ko by the end of the day if I don’t hahaha. :))

          • April 10, 2014 / 1:31 am

THANK YOU FOR THIS, EILES! Much appreciated. Will keep it mind should I give in to trying their bases. So many good products actually – don’t know what to prioritize. Their lip pencils ba, their new contour product or the bases!

This looks really nice! Will consider this in my options. I’m currently on the look for a new foundation. πŸ˜€ Thanks for the great review!

Hi beb! Looking forward to you trying out Bobbi Brown bases soon. What’s/are your current foundation/s ba?

I started on Bobbi Brown foundations… but I’ve come to realize that the foundations do oxidize on my skin – and I have mostly normal skin. To counter that, I usually buy 1 shade lighter πŸ™‚

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:31 pm

Ooh, interesting! Thanks for the heads up, Lily. I didn’t experience oxidation with Skin Foundation though! πŸ™‚

  9. April 3, 2014 / 12:16 am

This makes your skin look lovely- flawless, yet natural. I sampled this a while back, and unfortunately it was a bit too dewy for my oily skin. Looks great on you, though- glad you like it!

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:32 pm

Thank you Jennifer! I agree, it may be too hydrating for oily skin. I recommend the Long-wear Even Finish foundation instead πŸ™‚

  10. April 3, 2014 / 8:17 am

You look blooming on the ‘after’ pic Shari!

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:41 pm

Aww thanks NIkki :’) Lalo na bare-faced ako niyan so your compliment means much more :’))

and i was like.. “Wooooaaaahhhh..” o.o

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:41 pm

      Indeed πŸ˜‰

  12. April 3, 2014 / 7:06 pm

yea i was testing out some fo the bobbi brown shadows but sort of waffling one them. i do like the finish of ths but i wonder if i’ll need something to stop the oilies. this sounds promising on that front though.

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:42 pm

Yes, you do babe. It’s hydrating so oily-skinned need a mattifying primer underneath or super light powder on top πŸ™‚ I use my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish paired with this and it works pretty well πŸ™‚

  13. April 3, 2014 / 9:24 pm

You look beautiful with or without makeup, battle scars and all πŸ™‚ Does this work better or the same as the KGD Aqua Foundation?

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:45 pm

Aww gurl, thanks naman :’)) Masyado kayo mabait ni Nikkibabe.

Honestly, for the state of my skin now – I find the Koh Gen Do more effective. They are somehow similar but different rin. The texture of Skin Foundation is runnier and thinner, finish is satin with a slightly dewy glow. KGD is satin/demi-matte. If I had flawless skin, I wouldn’t have any qualms using Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation though. But for now, I’d use KGD more because I need some real covering up (na di full coverage) πŸ™‚

      • April 8, 2014 / 7:30 pm

Kasi naman. Pretty talaga! If you see me, nako, your battle scars are nothing compared to mine. Nahihiya nga ako makipagkita because of that. But then again, masyadong makapal ang muka ko hahaha

Okay, I’ll stick with my KGD then. I’m thinking about getting the Hourglass Immaculate something something foundation haha. Wala lang, share ko lang :p

  14. April 3, 2014 / 10:05 pm

Nice foundation, but not for me. πŸ™ I’ve yet to try the Long-Wear Even Finish one! πŸ™‚

    • April 8, 2014 / 6:45 pm

The Long-Wear Even Finish is good for combi/oily skin types πŸ™‚
