Say Hi to Kauai

Six words, girls: the one that broke my ban. Two months of no beauty purchases accompanied by a growing indifference towards anything makeup were suddenly engulfed by god-dang-that-is-too-beautiful-to-pass-up-on-I-must-have-it. And so, there goes my ban. It doesn’t help that the decision to purchase was made more accessible by the temptation of GCASH-AMEX Virtual Pay*. I mean, I could easily have waited for the collection to get to Philippine shores but because I wanted to have it right now, I ordered it online. *hides in corner now* I mean, look at that beautiful gold and purple glistening in direct sunlight, you guys. Looking at swatches online made me want to swipe my screen in hopes of touching the pan because it just looked so buttery and smooth I just wanted to cop a feel. I haven’t had much luck with most of the NARS palettes I’ve purchased *ehem*Voulez-Vous*ehem*Fairy’s Kiss*, so my lusting over NARS’ creme de la creme eyeshadow formula is stronger than ever. kauai1NARS Eyeshadow Duo in KAUAI did not disappoint. It is a stunning metallic combo of a cool-toned gold and complex purple (yes, again with the purple) that are so vibrant and pigmented, I could easily say it’s one of NARS’ best releases so far. Probably even one of the top 3 eyeshadow duos in their collection, at that. kauai2kauai3 kauai4

The Lowdown

Not all NARS eyeshadows are created equal. Kauai is one of those blessed with bold, saturated and mega vibrant pigmentation that produces full opacity with just one swipe. The texture? Honest to goodness creamy and buttery goodness that almost feels as if you’ve dampened a dry shadow quite a bit. I could swear these feel like a cream-to-powder hybrid of some sort. The finish varies from a subtle satin shimmer in natural lighting to an almost high-shine sparkle in artificial lighting. One swipe produces such intense pigment that it’s better to use a light hand to buff in the shadow. No wimpy, sheer-but-trying-to-convince-yourself-it’s-actually-quite-pigmented shade in here, folks. The creaminess makes a little go a long way. Blendability? Psh. Throw out those expensive brushes, these practically blend themselves together. Ahhh, I have no qualms about the formula of this. Maybe the minimal fallout from the microshimmers, but overall… touche, Francois Nars, topnotch indeed! Please make all your eyeshadow formulas as lustful as this one. Gosh, if the NARSissist palette shades were formulated as such, I would buy one for everyone! Ha! (Full disclosure: I did give in to the NARSissist palette despite much resistance, phooey) kauai5 The purple shade is a duochrome chameleon. It appears an vibrant bluish-purple under certain lighting and turns into a reddish-purple in another. NARS calls it smokey orchid. Let’s not talk about all the other purples I had just recently acquired. I find this a beautiful wearable albeit quite shimmery for everyday kind of purple I’d probably wear full-on at night, but toned down during the day. I experienced minimal fallout from this one, though.kauai6 The gold is a metallic antique gold that’s neither too yellow nor too true gold (do I see a green tinge in there?). NARS calls it gold lame. It almost looks like a brassy golden shade with a beautiful glow. No fallout from this one at all. kauai9kauai10kauai11 nars13

Final Thoughts

If you were to buy your first NARS duo, please let it be this one. The formula is fantastic and you won’t at all feel let down despite the price. If the shades aren’t your usual go-to shades, then much better! You probably have too many neutrals already so a pop of beautiful gold and duochrome purple would be a great addition to your stash. Oh and I forgot to include a layered swatch of the two shades together which form a stunning metallic purplish taupe much wearable for everyday, if color isn’t your way to go. So beautiful, I’m hitting myself for not including the swatch here (I’ll add it though once I get the chance to photograph it). I’m wary of proclaiming makeup items as must-haves, but for this one I won’t be stopping myself – it’s a NARS must-have, you guys.

I purchased the item myself but through Globe’s GCASH-AMEX Virtual Pay which has a tie-up with My Shopping Box. All opinions are solely my own. Not affiliated with NARS or any of their PR agencies.

  8. February 21, 2014 / 10:26 pm

Gorgeous and very spring appropriate look!
I agree NARS eyeshadows often differ in textures. For some reason, I think it was intended to create difference, though. 🙂

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:51 am

Regarding difference in textures, I see the point. It’s just that some shimmer ones (similar to the finish of this duo) are poorly pigmented while some mattes are patchy and hard to blend 🙁 Hit or miss, really.

  13. February 22, 2014 / 10:14 am

It’s always the most beautiful products that’s the reason for breaking a ban. In this case, it’s worth it. I can see why you bought this. It looks divine on you. 🙂

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:53 am

Aww thanks Nikki!! :* Thanks for confirming… broken ban justified!! Haha!

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:54 am

Longest two months of my life (well not really! as my makeup lemmings did die down ultimately) :))

      • February 27, 2014 / 11:01 am

lol i can’t even imagine! although, i’ve done pretty good in 2014 so far and spent very little of my own $ on beauty aside from the NYC trip (where i didn’t spend all that much in my mind anyway lol)

Wow how pretty is this! I love the gold shade, the tone of it looks quite unique 🙂

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:54 am

I agree. Not too yellow gold.. more of an antique washed out brassy gold. 🙂

  15. February 23, 2014 / 1:17 pm

The cool gold shade is so pretty! I wonder if it would look good on warm skin tones like mine?

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:55 am

I have warm skin tones, Aviva. I think with proper concealing of undereyes (super needed!!), this would look good. 🙂

  16. February 24, 2014 / 8:38 am

Oh Shari! You had me at wanting to “cop a feel”, lol!!!! So funny!! I adore this look on you! Purple is your shade, mane! I happened to be in a Nordstrom today and saw this duo under the glimmering overhead lights and yes…it is drool-worthy!! I was (semi) good and only bought the NARS Radiant Creamy Compact Foundation instead. Is it wrong that I was beyond excited to have moved up from Deauville (light 2) to Santa Fe (medium 2)?! I was practically throwing confetti. A pale person’s mini party, lol!

    • February 27, 2014 / 2:57 am

HAHAHAHA Kristen malove! :)) Thank you thank you! Good for you for resisting!!! 🙂
But please.. dont tempt me on the Creamy Compact Foundation! I’ve been wanting to check it out since its release but imposed on myself a 1-in-1-out rule on foundations. And wow, congrats for moving up shades!! I could just imagine your lovely complexion now!!

      • March 13, 2014 / 12:15 am

You are the sweetest, Shari! Sending mental hugs ‘cross the world!
LOVE this 1-in-1-out rule for foundations! That is a GREAT idea! I say this as I have a new foundation on the way to me by mail…I’m terrible! But to my credit, it is a special one for wedding pictures so it was therefore a solid investment. 😉 LOL!

  17. February 24, 2014 / 10:17 am

Ganda!! I want that duo too.

I cannot resist gold and purple shades, what a beautiful duo. I love the eye look you did, simply gorgeous.

  19. February 27, 2014 / 2:51 am

I agree! Although I’ve seen green eyed ladies rock this duo too!
