Park Right Here for Beautiful Hair

Remember my previous hair color session that turned out a bit lighter and brighter than I had expected? I remember telling myself to wait it out, let it grow and just trim it off. But by some stroke of good luck, L’Oreal Professionel Philippines launched another project in collaboration with Park Jun Beauty Lab, a top Korean salon responsible for styling and maintaining Manila’s well-coiffed. Aja aja, sign me up ASAP! I’ve heard about Park Jun only through the grapevine having styled this celebrity’s hair, having colored this blogger, etc etc. So I tried to look for reviews of the salon online (didn’t want my last experience to happen again) and found out that they don’t really advertise as much as their other (direct) competitors. Anyway, from my limited “research” a.k.a googling, I discovered that Park Jun Beauty Lab is actually a large Korean chain of salons worldwide that opened their first branch in the Philippines 4 years ago. Their style team is mostly comprised of Koreans who were formally trained in hairdressing, which all became irrelevant anyway the moment I stepped in the salon and saw the stylists themselves — um, somebody slap me, I think I’ve been transported to a K-POP music video dressing room!! 3c

First of all, I gotta say this — Park Jun is HUUUUGEUpon entering, the beautiful receptionists greet you with the warmest, most sincere smiles. Small detail, but this matters to me since there are some salons that give off a snobby vibe making you uncomfortable even in the slightest. After the details were sorted, we were immediately escorted to the cutting, coloring and main shebang area which was… underground. Okay, not underground, but one floor below. Before taking the stairs “underground“, we passed through the VIP area (also located on the first floor) where you can choose to be treated in private. Beside it are rooms for spa and wax treatments also offered by the salon. Going forth a.k.a one floor down, we get to the main area…. 14 Clean, spacious, well-lit and not at all cluttered. I like the minimalist vibe. But, I really appreciate the wide space, since most salons I’ve frequented have pretty narrow walk spaces where two abreast is already quite impossible to achieve without having to lean sideways. Yes, I know, why do I see those (irrelevant) things. 1 And then we get to the mane event — why hello there! I just could not take another day looking at myself in this hair color. I know some people who can rock this look, but I’m definitely not one of them. To be honest, I’m really not a fan of gold slash copper tones hair-wise, so this hair color session could not have come at a better time. Thank you, L’Oreal! 4

I really, really, can I say really admire how my stylist du jour, Mr. Kino Lee, carefully strategized on how to go about with my hair. Beside him is General Manager Stacey Kim, also suggesting warfare tactics. I couldn’t really understand what was going on because they spoke in Korean while in deliberation but I felt 100% confident already that great things are about to happen. I like that they did not haphazardly just dive in without any game plan. In between deliberation, they asked me some details like when was my last color, what I want to happen, what shade in particular I want, etc. For some reason, I was insistent on my original plan (from my previous hair color session) which was an ash brown ombre. However, as per Kino’s suggestion, instead of applying two shades, he believes that just one dark ash shade to tone down the lower part of my hair would be better. Because after a few washes, it will eventually fade to a lighter ash brown that will create the ombre effect I want. If he applies a super light shade now, the ombre may not look as good after a few weeks because of the fading. And because of the long planning strategy that ensued between him and Stacey, I felt safe and confident that they knew best. So I left my hair plans entirely up to him! 6

Say hello to my stylist, Kino Lee! Doesn’t he look like he just stepped out of a Koreanovela? 5

My sister, Raiza, was also invited for a session so we decided to go together. We were in between our treatments when Stacey found out that we were actually sisters — which they refused to believe at first! I know, I know, I’m too cool to be her sister. Bahaha! Check her own experience here7 Kino had an assistant, Nairu, who worked with him throughout the color. Due to a previous event, I have developed a slight fear of stylist’s assistants who don’t listen to their seniors. Thankfully, Nairu proved to be otherwise. Also, Kino was very precise and quite authoritative that he made sure he was the one to do the delicate areas a.k.a almost everything, especially the part where the ombre starts. Truly expert hands at work that I did not feel any tinge of worry for what may happen after. 8

The battle is over and I AM VICTORIOUS! Now that is how you do ash brown, folks! So just for the record, even if my whole tone throughout this review is nothing but adrenaline-filled excitement, I have to say… I LOVE IT!! So much so that I may have found my new go-to hairdresser whom I will entrust my entire life hairscapades to. A bit ironic that the best person to understand my hair needs isn’t even someone who speaks the same native language. 9 10

Park Jun = the Gift that Just Keeps on Giving

After the hair color, he gave me a complimentary cut to snip away the split ends and give it a more blunt look, as compared to the wispy one I was sporting. As if that was not enough, he also offered to give me a touch of Korean flair — with some lovely, wavy, loose curls. Just have to share (cos I find it too cute) — after doing each section, he holds the curl on the palm of his hand and blows it softly before letting it fall down on its own. Woops, did I just divulge a Korean top secret? 1112

If I could label a salon an HG — Park Jun Beauty Lab would definitely be a top contender. Of course, I couldn’t yet as I have to try other services (which I will definitely come back for personally) so I can confirm. I have decided, however, that I will be sticking to Kino for hair color and cuts going forward as I like how he understands what I want despite the language barrier (I mean, he speaks good English, but still, no Filipino to further explain what I want!). I also like how he cares for the state of my hair (extreme dryness and damage) so he suggests stopping all kinds of coloring, straightening, perming activities for a few months first. Thank you as well to the beautiful Stacey Kim whom I was close to interviewing regarding her skin care routine. Poreless perfection at its finest! I also looove the shade of lipstick she’s sporting. I was talking to her the whole time in English, when suddenly she blurted out Filipino words and realized she also speaks the language. 13

Kamsamnida, L’Oreal & Park Jun Salon!

I included a before and after shot just so you can see the stark difference! Park Jun Beauty Lab, thank you for being my hair savior. L’Oreal, thank you for giving me another chance to see the wonders of your hair color products. Mikki Galang and Castro PR, thank you for inviting me to try this. I’m truly, sincerely, honestly impressed (and so so happy!). To anyone looking for a change in hair – style, color or cut — I couldn’t recommend Park Jun enough. Everyone we were with in the salon that day walked out with beautifully coiffed hair. Also, expect to walk out itching to star in a K-POP music video.

I love the color and the curls they did after the treatment! Lately I’ve been trying to push into curling my hair by myself without using any chemicals or hair iron. It works but since my hair is naturally straight, it can sometimes just go a bit wavy and then back to being straight. lol

    • November 26, 2013 / 2:21 am

That happens to me, too! I use mousse before curling so the curl stays and doesn’t fall straight immediately. I also use a heat protectant to protect my hair from further damage. Although, I normally just air dry most days 🙂
