Lipstick Week Day 7 series ender — Drugstore Lipsticks!

Hey, I’m no brand snob. I have my favorite drugstore brands and products, too. While I’ve encountered a few hits and misses, there are certainly gems and not-so-secret treasures I discover upon perusing my favorite PCX, Watson’s and SM department stores (beauty sections). In fact, I can spend a good hour or so browsing through these places.

I started my quest into the lipstick jungle a year and a half ago with Revlon and NYX. While my sister has already misplaced my favorite Revlon lipstick before (review here) — I still have three of my NYX lipsticks (among the few I originally started with) in addition to a L’Oreal, an Ever Bilena and an Avon lipstick I picked up along the way.

I love how more into oranges and corals I was before than I am now. My tendency to go for pinks was always there, I guess. I had one red which was the Revlon matte lipstick my sister lost, but I absolutely loved (it was my go-to for night outs then).

I used to want to collect these NYX round lipsticks before because the color selection and price point was a match made in lipstick heaven for a starter like I was. They are richly pigmented, too! They go on so smoothly on the lips too because they are so creamy. In fact, so creamy that NYX’s downfall is how easily their lipsticks melt into lipstick oblivion especially in the Philippine’s tropical weather. I lost three of them that way and looking at my hand swatches above, you’ll see that Femme is so rich and dense because it’s sauntering down the meltdown path as well. Also, longevity is an hour TOPS! I can’t even make it stay put for more than an hour. But then I guess, that’s what the NYX lipliners are for. On its own though, the round lipsticks don’t last too long.

Price: Php150 – Php200 / tube depending on where you buy it

Ever Bilena

This is a local brand and I’ve only tried their matte line. Its formula is quite drying, emphasizing lines, the whole shebang. Also, it drags on the lips making it quite tricky to apply. However, I like the color Mauvey, it reminds me of MAC Faux, a shade I wore almost everyday when I was working then. I wouldn’t completely write this brand off because I have yet to try some other shades which hopefully have more forgiving matte formulations.

Price: Php155

This is the one and only L’oreal lipstick I have which made me fall in love with pinks. It lit me up instantly making me look more awake and full of life (even if I had only 3-4 hours sleep the night before). It was a limited edition Project Runway tube that was not released here in the Philippines, though. I bought it in one of the bazaars during the Christmas season.

My gripe with this though is how drying it is — like 10 minutes upon application, I feel like wiping it off already. I guess then I stuck with it because I thought that’s how all lipsticks feel like when worn, but now that I’ve experimented with different formulas, I realize that it’s not supposed to be THIS drying. Also, it bleeds! I actually messed up application in the photo so there is quite a bit of smudging on the left part.

LOVE the color, though. The longevity is not bad, too! Once it fades, the stain it leaves is the hardest to remove among all the lipsticks mentioned in this post.

Check out below what Chanel lipstick I think this is a dupe for.

Chanel Dupes?

Ever Bilena Mauvey and L’Oreal Audacious Amazon reminded me of two Chanel shades I blogged in my previous Lipstick Week entry. Check out their swatches below:

Chanel Seduisante and Ever Bilena Mauvey are not quite dupes — Seduisante is pinker and Ever Bilena pulls more nude. I should have swatched Mauvey and MAC Faux which I think are closer. Chanel Exaltee and L’Oreal Audacious Amazon are very similar and almost indistinguishable in the swatch above. I actually got confused which is which but the main difference is the pigmentation. L’Oreal is heavily pigmented with that swatch above done with just one swipe. Chanel needs 2-3 swipes to be as heavily pigmented as L’Oreal. Chanel is also easier to apply. L’oreal is very tricky because it bleeds – once you make a mistake, you’ll need a lip remover to clean up.

Are you still there? Or did I bore you with all my lipstick musings?

Thankfully, LIPSTICK WEEK IS OVER! To celebrate this, my next post will be a little giveaway for my fellow lipstick junkies out there. But before that, please share your favorite DRUGSTORE LIPSTICK BRAND!

I heard that nyx lipsticks have the highest lead content, like avon. I gave away mine after

I have to look into that! I read about L’Oreal lipsticks having high lead content too. But never looked up NYX and Avon’s!! Thanks for this. Hopefully they’ve changed their formulations since then.

I can totally relate with this post. Like-i-wrote-it relate. Haha. You should definitely check out Palladio lipsticks at Beauty Bar. They are less than P400 but they are super pigmented, super creamy and opaque. Im surprised it doesn’t have decent reviews yet!

I’ll check them out Joy! I actually like BLOOM’s lipsticks – i have one up for review (now that you mentioned it!) 🙂 Palladio has great eyeliners, too! I’ll check the lipstick range next time.
