I know, right? I’ve just waxed poetic in a recent blog post about my cooking skills (erm, lack thereof, to be more specific) yet here I am with a perfect-looking Crispy Pata and Lechon Kawali for noche buena. Who am I and what in Gordon Ramsay’s yelling and throwing things sorcery is this, you ask? First off, yes I “cooked” this, *wink wink*. Second, it was easy. Third, it was quick!
As a working mom, I find it really challenging to squeeze in cooking something new and adventurous apart from my usual easy-to-prepare meals. For times I don’t even have time to prepare, we order delivery or dine out in a restaurant to compensate. But with the insane traffic everyday and the high cost of eating out, it definitely isn’t something sustainable nor something I want to make a habit of doing.
We recently found the perfect answer – and it was during one of Selene and I’s grocery trips together.
I’ve been thinking of what to contribute to our family noche buena the past weeks instead of my usual pasta dish – which my sister Raiza volunteered to prepare this year. A week ago, I discovered something new in the native section while choosing meat cuts for our daily meals. It was new, something I didn’t see yet before during our grocery trips. Two bags, each with the words crispy pata and lechon kawali emblazoned on the packaging, caught my attention.
Heat and Eat“, it says. My curiosity was piqued. “Fully Cooked“, it says on the bottom part. Sounds perfect. “What’s the catch?“, I think to myself. Will the Crispy Pata taste as good as if I prepared it from scratch? Most probably… especially since I can not prepare it from scratch, haha. Will the meat be tender? That was my further concern.
But I was so sold on this even if I haven’t tried or heard anything about them yet. So I got two of each – the Crispy Pata priced surprisingly at PHP325 and the Lechon Kawali priced at only PHP 230 – and then traipsed down the cashier with Selene. I will be serving Crispy Pata on Christmas Eve dinner by hook or by crook.

The Trial

So the reason I bought two of each is so I can do a trial run of these before Noche Buena. We have a turbo broiler at home which I opted to use. It can also be pan-fried but I like turbo broiling more so it’s even and I don’t have to do any flipping.
I opened the Crispy Pata first – was psyched to find out the cut is bigger than I expected it to be! For Php325, I expected a smaller pata. It’s actually huge – same as those in Filipino restaurants that usually cost twice the price. How to cook it? I literally just took if off the pouch and placed it on the turbo for 40-45 minutes. Once I hear the crackling of the skin after 45 minutes, I know it’s ready to serve. Now for the ultimate test – the taste test.
I also did the same for the lechon kawali. Take off the pouch, heat on the turbo broiler and bam, eat. Look at that crispy skin, I still dream about it.

The Taste Test

…”Wow, ang sarap ha!” were the first words I could manage after being caught off guard by the tenderness of the meat. It easily falls off when sliced with the crispy skin crackling through every slice. It doesn’t taste too salty, as well. I saved some for my mom to taste and even she was impressed by it – and she doesn’t usually eat crispy pata! The lechon kawali is equally as tender yet crispy. Definitely cooking the other two packs for tomorrow’s Noche Buena.

I’m so ecstatic to have found a really convenient way to cook new dishes for the family without having to eat out in a restaurant or spend a whole day doing trial & error to perfect a new dish at home. Of course, if you have the time and the energy to exert in making it from scratch, by all means! It’s just that for moms who are just too busy, we have a new BFF in these Heat and Eat packs that aren’t just perfect for noche buena but for all year round.
