Double the Lip

Double the fun
I have always awaited Benefit’s next lip release especially as it’s been a long time since they’ve updated their lipstick offering. They’re well known for their beautiful boxed blushes (don’t tell me you never owned one!), well-loved mascaras, solid everyday bases and of course – one of my favorites – their workhorse brow range. But lipstick? I don’t own a single one nor have I tried their old formula! I think I only know one friend who has mentioned to me in passing that Benefit’s old lipstick range was good though (Ms. D, I am looking at you). I’ve been super curious especially since this is their biggest lip release to date. Couldn’t help thinking, “How will Benefit differentiate its lipstick from the others already available in the market?”

The Lowdown

One of my hypotheses was that Benefit would jump in the liquid matte lipstick train. Thank heavens they didn’t. I love matte lipsticks but I already have quite a few favorite matte formulas from other brands. Plus, every other brand is coming out with their own version of liquid matte and well, it just gets repetitive. I want something I may not seem to want at first but will pique my interest and maybe get me to like it. You know what I mean? I know you do!
Benefit’s Double the Lip They’re Real lipsticks did pique my interest. A liner and a lipstick? What does that mean? Is it more of a lip liner that can pass off as a lipstick shade as well so you feel like you’re getting two products when you actually just have one? I’ve a lot of those. That’s not new. But I was wrong. Benefit’s take is actually a lipstick that has a built-in liner shade so you get two shades in one bullet. They’re not quite like other lipsticks I’ve seen before in the sense that they perform as a lip liner and lipstick in one application. Meaning it’s like applying a lipstick and a different lipliner together in one go.
This is because the lipstick is shaped like a teardrop where the pointed tip features a darker shade as the liner and the rounded body features a lighter shade as the lipstick. The pointed tip lines while the body fills in the rest of the lips. In theory, this is perfect – perfectly contoured, fuller lips in one swipe!! But when I tried it, it has a slight learning curve. Then I realized my lips are probably too big so I have trouble applying evenly and perfectly unlike the girl in their promotional video who did it effortlessly.
However, I found that applying it in one swipe works really well for some of the shades as the color of the liner and the lipstick are quite close that they meld together beautifully. But for the others, the difference between the two is just too stark that I have to blend them out more. I love the ‘ombre’ gradient that is achieved by doing this, though! There are 8 shades – Criminally Coral, Fuchsia Fever, Flame Game, Revved-Up Red, Nude Scandal, Lusty Rose, Pink Thrills, Juicy Berry.
As for the formula, this is a dry lip diva’s BFF. It is buttery though not greasy and yet beautifully pigmented with medium coverage. All of them glide on the lips smoothly with a lightweight feel. The finish is a satin which sets with a subtle sheen that makes your lips appear plump and full. I have been using this a lot recently – the Juicy Berry shade never leaves my bag.
It doesn’t wear long, though – you have to keep reapplying. But that’s the price to pay for hydrated lips, so I’m okay with that. I guess my only other gripe is that the lip liner shade could’ve been matte instead to prevent bleeding and have the lipstick formula stay in place. That’s why most lip pencils are matte, right? But anyhow, I admire Benefit for stepping up their lip game and offering something new yet totally usable for everyday. For that, bravo! Now, on to the swatches…

Complete Lip Swatch

I have complete photo swatches but they were accidentally erased in my memory card (HUHUbellz). So yep, I’m embedding this lip swatch video I did instead!

Sharing this swatch photo by Benefit, too, for skin tone matching.

So, which shade/s do you like the most? 🙂

Criminally Coral looks amazing on you! <3 However, I'd pass on this. Ya know I love me my matte lippies so something with a sheen like these wouldn't really satisfy my needs. Hahaha

This is such a cool idea! I agree that some shades look a little too different from each other, but these give a really cool effect x

They do, actually! I love that they went a step further and developed a liner-lipstick in one even if it sounds confusing at first. They work really great!

Criminally Coral and Juicy Berry fits you Ms Shari but for me, I like most is Criminally Coral. I never tried any Benefit’s products before because it’s pricey for a full time mom like me.
