The Facial That Left Me Wanting More

Healthiest Skin Ever

When I hear of Dermalogica, I think of effective skincare products that are clinically proven and recommended by dermatologists. Straight shooting skincare. That’s Dermalogica for me. What I didn’t know was beyond their superb skincare line, they also offer treatments and services in their clinic! They have a clinic, yes! Dermalogica is a brainchild of Jane Wurwand, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist. Her vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances) and would embrace skin health.
As for their treatments, Dermalogica services always begin with their famous Face Mapping technique, which is an analysis of your skin up close to detect signs of dehydration, breakouts, hyperpigmentation and congestion in different areas of the face. I found this very enlightening and advantageous because not only do you get the breakdown of your skin condition, you’re also equipped to know which facial treatment would be best and most effective for you. It’s almost like getting a bespoke, tailor-fit facial.
I’ve been invited to try out their service which I am ecstatic to share with you here through a photo diaryish entry. If you’re looking for a facial treatment to perk your skin up after a long, tiring month of work work work (or stress stress stress), I urge you to give Dermalogica a try. They will really study your skin and make sure they address what it needs. Sometimes, we think we know what’s best for our skin based on what we want, but it turns out it needs something else entirely. This is exactly what happened to me in this first visit.

The Dermalogica clinic I went to is located in Rustan’s Makati 5/F. They have quite a full schedule, especially on weekends, so I opted to go on a weekday.

This is Ruth, my Dermalogica esthetician for that day. All therapists are licensed by Dermalogica and have undergone rigorous training. They conduct the facial mapping skin analysis and determine your skin condition before recommending the type of facial they believe your skin needs most.

My facial mapping results. I was so surprised to find out my skin is dehydrated! Well, I shouldn’t be surprised at all because I’ve been skipping out on my moisturizer and hydrating masks in place of exfoliation and brightening which does tend to dry out skin without proper moisturizing afterwards. Huhu. Ruth suggested their Advanced Facial Service which includes a Double Mask Treatment for Dehydrated Skin.

Love the pale blue walls that still give off that clean, sterile look without looking too much like a hospital if it were all white. He he!

This is one of their famous chemical peel treatments that do not have any of those inflamed, scarring, ugly post-peel effects most peels have. Definitely in my book to try this out too!

The army of Dermalogica skincare that make my heart skip a beat and my skin pores shrink and expand in excitement, lol.

The facial involves quite a relaxing yet energizing massage to infuse the skincare ingredients deep in the skin. After the pre-cleansing, they open up the pores through a facial steamer. After, they do the dreaded extractions (dun dun dun!). I used to hate this with a passion but I have acne, blackheads and whiteheads that just won’t go away no matter what exfoliant I use so I had to endure it.

The Colloidal Clinical Colloidal Oatmeal smells like Christmas morning breakfast. It smells sooo warm and toasty that it made me hungry. Haha! But colloidal oatmeal is actually a very good active ingredient in treating sensitive skin. Due to its anti-inflammatory and soothing nature, studies published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology suggest using colloidal oatmeal as a first-line treatment to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis.

Results
Honestly, I didn’t expect to see such a difference because well, in my head, “it’s only just a facial!” but WOW. Just look at the photos above and see how well hydrated and plump my skin looks like – and that is just one session. I came in with dull, almost a zombie-like complexion because of my late nights (The Good Wife binge watch, you guys). I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised with my face mapping results too, now that I look back. I’ve been puyat and tired the past months (no yaya!) and have skipped out on my whole skincare regimen (except my serums!). Goes to show that serum definitely isn’t enough if the skin is lacking sleep, water (!!) and exercise. Huhu.
But yes, I’m so happy with this facial treatment that I’m reconsidering my no-need-for-monthly-facials philosophy. I’m eager to try their newest addition, the Dermalogica IonActive Power Treatment which I will document on my next skincare series. The IonActive Power Treatment is a customizable, results-driven facial that comprises of ultrasound technology and gelloid massaging that addresses skin’s luminosity, smoothness and hydration levels. Can. Not. Wait.
