Anti-Aging Secrets I Recently Learned

“But I’m not aging yet!”

… said quite a few women, actually. Including me!
Misconception: Anti-aging should start when you are already in your late 30s-40s. Tsk tsk, don’t be like me.
This used to be my own words as I was in denial stage every time I’m faced with anti-aging products. But I was recently invited by Belle de Jour to an anti-aging talk led by skin and beauty experts tapped by L’Oreal Philippines and this all changed. I usually shy away from “anti-aging” as I feel that the topic is reserved for when I’m actually already in my aging stage (which to me is 40 above). How much more wrong could I be?! Come to think of it, it does make sense – it’s much better to start an anti-aging routine early so by the time the aging process is at full speed, it won’t be as intense and apparent as it should be. All because you’ve armed your skin with a defense line that combats the free radicals (the aging devils) that cause the sagging, the wrinkling, everything. As a “beauty blogger”, I’m now an advocate of starting an early anti-aging routine (that starts with putting on sunscreen everyday!) to prevent rather than frustratingly having to correct and reverse in the future. Are you with me?

“Timeless Beauty” as explained by L’oreal Managers and what they found out in a skin research headed by their team.
The team found out that only 5 out of 10 Filipina women are educated about anti-aging? And only 1 out of these 5 continue on to regularly use skincare regimen for anti-aging? I used to be part of the 4 that didn’t continue to an anti-aging regimen. Now I’m glad to be that that ONE who continues on.

Tips on Skin Aging

by Dra. Pam Huang
Dra. Pam was so beautiful (the epitome of her talk!) that I felt like going vegan after her talk, lol. One thing I learned from her talk: eating (too much) sweets (sugar) results to aging! NOOooooo..
As a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and a fellow of the Philipppine Dermatological Society, Dra. Pam’s number one tip is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stop smoking, drink less (emphasis on the less and not STOP because she says it’s impossible for most) alcohol, eat healthy, exercise – you know, the usual stuff we all know about but are too lazy to live by. A less common and mundane-sounding but equally important tip – avoid repetitive facial expressions. It’s because when you make a certain facial expression, the underlying muscles contract and that repeated contraction will cause facial lines. Lastly, she urges – again, urges - women to adapt a skin care regimen starting in their 20s. Cleansing properly and regularly (which we all should be doing already anyway!), choosing products particularly for your skin type and treating your #1 anti-aging skin concern first before others. Among the 7 common skin problems are wrinkles, firmness and elasticity, dryness, enlarged pores, darkening, acne and skin sensitivity. Which one is your main concern?
Also, a very sad thing I learned (because I have major sweet teeth), sugar causes your insulin levels to spike, which leads “a burst of inflammation throughout the body”. Inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin which in turn results to sagging skin and wrinkles. Nooooo……

During the workshop, we were treated to a mini makeover and photoshoot to capture our Timeless Beauty. It’s supposed to serve as a remembrance as well as a reminder to always carry on with our anti-aging regimen no matter how lazy we get at night!!

We also had a Skin Analysis expert probe our skin conditions from pores (as shown above!), sebum, dryness, melanin, etc. I found out that I had very small, almost minimal pores, you guys. It means my past and current skincare regimen have been working well on this aspect. What I failed at though was on the undereye wrinkle test (which coincides with my other skincare test I took before). Need to get on that eye cream parade STAT.

I like to try those Loreal Revitalift Range. Glad to read this. I’m very late na pala on my skincare. I thought that when I reached 40, that’s the right time to start skincare products. I’m turning 39 on December. For a full time mom like me, that’s not my priority. Maybe, sabihin ko sa husband ko na sa xmas, eto nalang ang gift nya sakin.

ohh.. your skin really looks good. question po? about this discount, it’s only applicable there in SM Megamall? or I can also score Loreal products here in Cebu… I’d really want to try… Or better yet, Great L’Oreal Makeover , please come to Cebu please… Anyhow, thanks for sharing this. Very informative indeed…

You look stunning, Ms. Shari! White suits you well. :) I just turned 19 but I’m starting to invest in anti-aging products/practices. I’ve only recently realized the importance of sunscreen and I’m glad that I did! I’ve also started using eye cream, but I don’t think the product I got does anything significant for my skin. I still use it though because a little moisture in the undereye area wouldn’t hurt. =))) L’Oreal’s Revitalift line looks very promising, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to start using these products at my age yet. In the mean time I’ll be saving up for them because they get pretty expensive! Thank you for sharing your experience! I want to drop by the Megamall event to have my skin analyzed! :)

No matter how I hide my age spot and fine lines appears now that I’m in the mid 30s, If I had known earlier maybe I had a better way of taking care of my skin. But since I’m not really aware of it, I never imagine that everytime I look in the mirror it really shows..Good thing and better late than never coz its not too late for me yet, to make up with my skincare regimen, no matter how tired or busy I make sure not to skip my anti-aging regimen. I wonder if I will still be able to achieve a youthful skin like you have??hehe.. but then again thank you for sharing another wonderful experience and ideas on how to take care of our skin. XOXO, God Bless
