Matte About You
Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipsticks
A few beauty blogger friends and I have often discussed how frustrating some drugstore lipsticks marketed as “matte” are. More often than not, they’re not the bone dry mattes you’re used to – which can both be a good or a bad thing, depending on your preference and lip state. Personally, my lips are not a fan of bone dry mattes because of its perpetual Sahara climate – but I still fuss over lipsticks that claim to be “matte” but then never really dry down to one. So upon opening these Maybelline Creamy Matte lipsticks from the Color Sensational line, you could say I had my apprehensions.
Packaging. The Creamy Mattes come in a square, dark gray mauve packaging with a translucent, frosty cap – reminiscent to the older Color Sensational tubes so I failed to recognize it was actually a new range. Light, durable without being too flimsy. The tube packaging is silver with stickers on the bottom of the bullets labelled with shade number and name.
Texture and Finish. These are creamy slash slightly buttery yet comfortable on. The matte finish never sets to a dry matte feel but I would still label it as a matte as it has absolutely no shine when it sets. It’s an all day lipstick meaning you can wear it without your lips drying out too much (or at all for those without fussy lips). However, these don’t permanently set so they do transfer slightly when eating and drinking.
Wear Time and Pigmentation. Generally, most of these last on the lips for a good 4+ hours with minimal fading. These apply really smoothly and evenly but the pigmentation does vary from shade to shade. I find that with some shades, I have to swipe on more layers to get a really bold color, while others apply babam! in one swipe. Some (like Touch of Spice, which is one of my favorites!) apply patchily while others apply smoothly and evenly (like All Fired Up).
Real matte lipsticks that aren’t too drying, last an average amount of time, mostly pigmented and are only priced at Php299 – you can’t go wrong with these. However, if you have fussy lips, you have to prep your lips before since the formula can settle into lines and some apply patchily so those with dry flakes will have a harder time with application and evenness.
What I love about these the most is that some shades are dupes of MAC lipsticks like Divine Wine for MAC Diva, Vibrant Violet for MAC Heroine, Touch of Spice for MAC Twig. My personal favorites from this range are Touch of Spice and Divine Wine. What’s yours? Let me know below!
