Beauty and Her Bag
A New Series on The Misty Mom
I figured it’s time to do a new series on the blog that caters to my nosiness (how about let’s call it inquisitiveness instead?) regarding what’s inside women’s bags – makeup, crumpled pieces of receipts, loose change et al. I’ve been playing with this idea for a year now — where I personally take the photos, chit-chat with the “victim” and then finally showcase them here on the blog. However, I didn’t expect that my first subjects would be frikkin‘ top-billed actresses and It Girls in Manila. Talk about motivation to finally start on the project. Let’s get on to it, shall we? For my first ever Beauty and Her Bag feature — I present to you current It Girl slash actress slash model slash newly-added to her resume – international magazine cover girl – Janine Gutierrez.
Janine Gutierrez is a GMA artist and one of this generation’s newest It Girls. Check her international feature on UK-based magazine Suitcase here.
Fun fact: Janine and I were actually batchmates in college — having both gone to Ateneo de Manila. When I was introduced to her during this shoot, she tells me right away “You look familiar..”. Yes, Janine, I was that long-haired girl wearing colored skinny jeans, vests and Chuck Taylors downing those Chinky Chicken nuggets and Kebab House kebabs in SOM Mall every day. I remember seeing her in campus then (she hasn’t entered show business yet) and always had this thought that this girl is so uniquely beautiful, it would be a shame not to share her beauty to the world. True enough, when she entered the industry after graduation, she shot to fame in an instant and graced magazine covers left and right as if gurl don’t need no sleep.
“I’ve a super simple beauty routine..”
What are three items you won’t leave your house without? Shu Uemura Lash Curler (all the makeup artists I’ve worked with swear by this), Mascara and Pressed Powder.
Share your off-duty no-taping work look. For daytime, I just use the three things I mentioned above – curl my lashes, apply mascara and top it with powder. At night when I’m going out, I usually just add lipstick and retouch with powder. That’s it. Super simple! Right now since I’ve a long day of work-related meetings, I brought quite a lot of makeup with me! I still struggle to put on eyeshadow on myself, though. That’s my weakness!
Are you a pink or a red lipstick girl? PINK! Right now, I always have two lipsticks in my bag – the Yazbukey matte pink and another Shu lipstick in a coral shade. It’s a perfect daytime pink but since I don’t really wear lipstick during the day, I wear it more often at night. Also, I find it tough to find pinks that will suit my skintone. This one is just right!
Are you Team Matte or Team Gloss? Definitely a matte girl! For me, matte just looks more effortless. (*Cue in our discussion on looking like we just ate finger lickin’ good chicken when wearing gloss)
What’s your signature scent? YSL Parisienne is my current perfume. I think I’ve gone through a few bottles of this already! I like that it’s fruity with the right mix of floral and rose topped with a powdery and woody combination.
Let’s talk eyeliner – are you a gel, liquid or pencil user? Pencil! Do you do winged, thin, cat eye, smudged? I just like to draw a normal, not-so thick line to slightly define my eyes and open them up without looking too made up, you know what I mean? (*Yes dear J, I know whatcha mean! The struggle is real for hooded-lid girls like us though!)
How do you remove all the gunk on your face at the end of the day? The Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil – hands down. I use the purple version, the Whitefficient one, which smells reallly good. I like that I just pump out the oil, slather it on and wash it off. And everything comes off. EVERYTHING. I even have a small travel-sized one with me all the time.
Do you double cleanse? No, I use just the oil cleanser both as my makeup remover and facial wash as well. So yah, just that! (*I was so surprised by this! I went through bottles of the Shu Cleansing Oil as well but always double cleansed. Good to know that it can be used on its own forrealz! )
What’s your skin type? I think my skin type is a combination of oily and dry. Depending on the weather – sometimes I can be extremely oily but then when I’m lacking sleep from long taping hours, I get really bad dry skin.
What’s your skincare routine then? I always moisturize. Wash my makeup off completely and then put on moisturizer – even when I’m tired and just want to get some rest. I started using eye cream recently but I still have to make it a habit ha ha! My three skincare musts – facial wash, moisturizer and sunscreen!
Any beauty advice? I know it’s cliche but really drink a lot of water. Water does wonders to the skin. Get enough sleep (!!!) and regarding makeup, don’t try to change the way you look with makeup – just enhance your features.
“I reserve using gloss for special occasions since I find matte lipsticks more effortless and low-maintenance than gloss.”

Her eyes are so expressive that staring into them may make you reveal your deepest darkest fears and secrets. I found Janine easy to talk to — her smile was so contagious I found my jaws aching a bit after our talk because I was also subconsciously smiling as well. Doesn’t matter if she was talking about a tube of lipstick or the brick wall background she also wanted to have done in her room. Her naturally arched brows may make her look unapproachable and masungit but again, just look into her eyes and you’ll instantly feel her true sweet, simple and down-to-earth personality. Watch out for this lady, you guys. She’ll be taking on more local and international projects in the months to come.
