ASUS Zenfone 2
In Search of Incredible (but Affordable!)
Noooope, my blog is not about to turn into a tech blog, don’t worry. When you receive an email asking you if you’d like to try out a new phone, is there any other option than “Why yes, I’d love to!”? I wasn’t quite a fan of Android prior to this experience — mostly because I don’t like complicated interfaces. I get extremely lost in the world of widgets. Also, I never was impressed with the non-iPhone cameras, which is a huge factor for me when choosing a phone. If they’re priced too closely with the iPhone just a bit pricier but the other phone’s camera isn’t as good – then you’d know what I’d go for.
But then ASUS, a leading laptop (and motherboards) manufacturer decided to give Samsung and other top Android phone brands a run for their money. The ASUS Zenfone 2 performs just as great as the lead phone runners of these brands except it’s half the price. The screen size is the same as the iPhone 6 Plus which comes at 5.5″ – and I am loving the clarity and tone of the colors. I wouldn’t want to bore you with technical details (and quite frankly, who am I to be all techy on this matter?) so I’ll just share my thoughts on the features that matter most to me.

THE GOOD STUFF
The screen comes in Full HD resolution with ASUS’ TrueVivid technology meaning photos register as close to their original and true color without sacrificing detail. The screen is 5.5″ with thin edges for maximum viewing and is covered by Gorilla Glass 3. The memory is 4GB RAM (iPhones only have 1GB!) which means you can have as many apps open without experiencing any lag or stutter. My unit has 32GB internal storage but it comes with a micro-SD slot that can go up to 64GB. It’s also a dual-SIM phone with one slot LTE-enabled, while the second slot only supports 2G. My current set-up now is I have a SMART Bro sim (for data) on the first slot and a prepaid SIM (for calls, text) on the second slot.
THE CAMERA. One of the most important aspects for me when it comes to cell phones is the camera. Zenfone 2 boasts a powerful one with its 13MP F2.0 features – I find the camera impressive as it has zero shutter lag, colors are a tiny bit more saturated than the iPhone’s. It’s not perfect though – the colors are off sometimes under direct sunlight. I personally love the Manual Shooting Mode which allows you to set the ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Metering Mode, etc. The Selfie Panorama also comes in handy during events when you wanna round up your friends a-la-Ellen Degeneres’ Oscar selfie. The Super Resolution mode captures and combines four 13MP photos to create one single 52MP image with spectacular quality. I recently read an article comparing this camera to the Samsung S6 and the difference is miniscule.

Final Thoughts
I’m no professional photographer so I can’t really get you into the detailed specifications of the phone. You can hunt down the tech blogs who specialize in that! All I can say is for its price, this phone performs almost as good as any flagship Android phone. Maybe not to the point that they’re equal, but for less than half the price, you certainly won’t feel it as inferior. The only qualms I have – the weight as it does have a heft to it and the battery life – which lasts longer than an iPhone but just up to one day as well. Overall, if you’re looking for a smartphone that won’t rob you and performs almost up to par as those twice to thrice its price, this one’s worth all the money you’ve saved up (and maybe you’d still have some left to invest after).
asus-zenfone-2-review-6 Put tempered glass on my screen because I’m a klutz.

4GB?!! The S6 only has 3. I’ve always been a loyal android user. I’m a very adaptive person so if you give me an iPhone or Android, I’m good either way.. I’ve been so in love with the camera of my S6 Edge! The iPhone 6 camera only has 8MP while Samsung has 16MP. Not as much modes but still enough. 🙂 Probably the only things annoying thing about the S6 is the lack of external memory and the large RAM causes the battery to drain faster. I still do really love my Edge and wouldn’t trade for anything (yet) 😉

PS I love your calling card!! Hahaha can I have one? 😀

Hihi those are two different business cards btw – one for my blog (which I never give out! LOL I think I only gave it out twice) and one for the shoe brand (the pink one). Ahhh that’s why the battery isn’t as long-lasting as I expected – it gets drained out ‘cos of the large RAM (I didnt even know the correlation but it makes sense. n00b). I’m shocked the S6 has no external memory – Samsung phones usually have right? But yes, I hate that the S6 EDGE has made me consider switching completely to Android (and has made me like the word EDGE – cos when I hear I usually think of the network (non-4G 3G) and get mad!). LOL! Enjoy your NY vacation Ray ray! Swatch all them goodies for me!!!! :****

Sounds like a real powerhouse, this one! The quality of the pics it takes looks good to me.

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:08 pm

Quality isn’t superb but it’s amazing for the price!! It’s sharp and captures detail very well 🙂

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:09 pm

I’m really not!! Haha. All I talked about were memory, camera and battery :)) Phone blogging has so much more tech lingo I didn’t understand anymore. Thanks Alyson!

I’m an apple girl through & through. I have not used another brand phone for gosh… since the iphone 3. Never used another smartphone that wasn’t apple. I think I am well and truly stuck in my ways. It does sound like a fab option for the price though!

I used to be a loyal Apple fangirl as well. LOL. But Android phones have really stepped it up and I’ve gotten curious!! Not as curious to completely switch as I still have an Apple phone :))

MANUAL MODE THOUGH!!! I’d love to use this for my blog photos, since I still can’t afford to get my SLR fixed or get a new one. I’ve only been using my Samsung S5 for my blog photos!

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:11 pm

Galing ng manual mode! I really appreciated this phone more because of that! Plus the Beautification mode has instant photoshop :)) Nakakaloka! May cheeks thinning, blush application (choose a shade) and eye enlargement, pati skin smoothing. Instamakeup yo!

I’m going through an internal debate of purchasing a camera vs a phone with good quality camera. Of course, the phone would be waaay more compact than lugging yet another item around in my purse.

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:12 pm

Phone with good quality camera = hitting two birds with less $$. In this day and age, a good camera phone + editing apps = no need for bulky cameras!

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:13 pm

It’s just been recently released, Alice! And yes, I’m not an Android fangirl (APPLE 5EVZ) but the new wave of Android phones in the market have really made me curious!

  6. May 14, 2015 / 8:09 pm

A few of my techy friends have gushed about this phone because of the features + affordable price!

The camera quality is also my main priority when looking at phone specs hahaha. 🙂

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:44 pm

Hahaha apir, when buying cellphones, camera dapat maganda :)) Not even the phone capabilities! Haha!
It’s such a big phone for techies pala – I’ve a few friends talking about this before I was even given this phone :))

I also go for a great camera when picking a new phone. Been satisifed so far with my iPhone (new iPhone user!) Haha. I do like the iPhone but not its price. Haha! I actually thought of getting a zenfone before but iPhone won. Maybe because I like the idea that it syncs with other apple products too like my iPad.

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:46 pm

AH YES! Yun lang – the syncing/airdrop-ing capabilities will win you over (even if the price is a major deterrent) haha! 🙂 I use Apple products rin so I can’t let go of my iPhone and go full on Android. 🙂

Nice!!! The phone looks really good and the camera looks decent in low light too! Android just never appealed to me tho

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:48 pm

My husband who had his Android era for such a long time before I got him to turn back to iPhone land (because FACETIME for our LDR is imptz!) never convinced me to even give Android a chance. Like HELL NO. But you know what, after tinkering with this Android phone, I had such a fun time!! As in, I liked the customization of almost everything (change font of text, keyboard, theme etc etc) – grabe hindi ako natulog looking for nice themes. I got so so bored with the look of iPhone’s UI after this! Haha

This Asus Zenfone 2 looks great. The quality of the pictures is great and then I am surprised that there’s 16 picture modes to choose from. It has 4GB memory pa! I wonder how great the quality of the “video” is seeing the pics you posted.

    Thanks for this review Ma’am!

Oooo, this looks fun and easy to use. I love the Selfie Panorama, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t take selfies at all ^.^

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:49 pm

I looove the selfie panorama too! Isama ang buong barangay!!! Haha. Haluuuu Kyarubebe :*

4GB RAM! Wow! I’m a fan of Sony phones myself, but this looks like a great option. And how much is a tempered glass screen protector?

    • May 24, 2015 / 12:50 pm

The tempered glass protector varies – around 350 up! I got this for 350 in Greenhills.
