And I’d like to motivate myself coming into 2015 so allow me to
the negativity & my hair as well!
Looking back at my old photos, I can’t believe I had hair thaaaat long. Can’t imagine how quickly I went through my shampoos then! 2014 marked the year I went shorter again and loved it! In terms of makeup, can I declare that I’ve been more experimental? On the lips, I went from sweet, angelic pinks to bright oranges and fuschias to deep plums and finally to oxblood reds. I also must note that last year, I’ve been more patient in doing my brows. I usually never spend more than 1 minute on them mostly because they’re a pain to shape, but have to say – 2014 was a good brow year.
the regular commenters, i love ya’ll!
I’m not sure what the tipping point was, but I felt like my blog grew this year not only in terms of statistics but in terms of community. I’m beyond ecstatic that from 2-3 people (Hi Raven, Sunny, Victoria!) I regularly converse with in the comments – I can now count beyond my fingers those I’ve gotten to know this year — this is the most exciting, exhilarating part for me! So yes, when comments dwindle, I do get a bit affected but of course – I understand that commenting is very time and effort consuming so there aren’t any hard feelings (I just busy myself drafting my novellas to why you don’t comment anymore and when you don’t reply, I have my mini voodoos of you I curse). But seriously, you know who you are fellow beauty addict, thank you for fueling this by-now-dead blog if it weren’t for our conversations.
The People and Events
Event FULL 2014, indeed!
Ahhhh, beauty events! My first ever beauty event was Benefit’s Big Easy launch. I will always and forever remember my excitement of having been invited to attend – and I still have the same enthusiasm every time a brand sends me an invite! While the events are to be looked forward to in themselves, my favorite part is meeting new people (cliche, but da TRUTH). Those who work in the beauty industry – brand managers, makeup artists; other bloggers – the veterans and my fellow newbies alike. I like exchanging insights with them and learning the history and trends both of the beauty industry and blogging – and how the two things come together.
PS. I also won’t forget the “swatch and drink” day I spent with fellow bloggers Bea, Tellie, Rae, Victoria in Shangri-la where we went around beauty counters to swatch lipsticks and then headed to a German pub to get some beers afterwards. Good times.
Look Ma, I’m on TV!
Another highlight last year was my first time to appear on national television! I was shaking so much from nervousness that the studio’s Antarctic-level airconditioning wasn’t helping. It was a short 10-minute TV guesting/interview for ANC Shoptalk where I talked about ways to earn as a blogger while being a full-time mom as well (I may have not been the optimal choice for this topic as I don’t earn millions of $$$$ from it like other bloggers do but it was a fun experience!). I will not link the interview because I’d like to keep what’s left of my dignity, thank you. Haha.
Much Ado About PR
PR-Friendly But Not So Much
If you’ve noticed, I’ve reviewed quite a few PR-sent products the past year and while I deem my blog “PR-friendly”, I’m quite choosy when it comes to accepting which brands to consider (hi to the PR who sends in martial arts press, please read my blog description at least!). I’ve also accepted some sponsored posts that generated income for this blog (trying to recoup my “investments” a.k.a impulsive makeup decisions). I am extremely grateful for these – to just be considered is an honor in itself – so don’t get me wrong when I say that I feel like I’m in limbo right now.
At the back of my mind, something’s pushing me to start being more “professional” about my blog (not in terms of title but more of the attitude – schedule posts, plan ahead, etc. etc). But there’s also a voice in my head saying, “but that’ll lose the spirit of the blog?” (whosever spirit that may be – probably Coke’s since I’ve consumed xx cans while typing out most of my entries).
If I sound like I’m complaining – good Lord, I’m not! I mean, this is a good kind of problem, hopefully a win-win kind. Because I love what I’m doing being a… beauty blogger. There, I said it. I never really said that out loud to anyone in person. Despite the tediousness of taking photographs and the seemingly shallow swatching sessions (where I sometimes ask myself “what the hell am I doing with my life“), I will always be passionate about it. So yes, hopefully this 2015, I will find the balance of how to incorporate PR posts as well with my own personal posts (which I will prioritize over press releases should I feel like doing so) – without feeling like I’ve turned my blog into a soulless beauty-product-selling machine.
Thank you for being a part of my 2014! I only wish to get to know YOU better this coming 2015. I’d love to know what topics you’d like to see more of on the blog — be candid and tell me what you feel, please!
