A Throwback to 2014: Blogging

themistymom-blogging I rarely ever talk about blogging here — not for the lack of interest, but more because I can’t seem to organize my thoughts on the subject well — but 2014 was a good blogging year for me. And I’d like to motivate myself coming into 2015 so allow me to barrage you with my looks from last year speak candidly of last year’s blog shenanigans. Also, yes – the photo above is completely staged. Notice how I suddenly became left-handed. themistymom-2014-1 themistymom-2014-2 themistymom-2014-3 themistymom-2014-4themistymom-2014-5

Chopped Off

the negativity & my hair as well!
Looking back at my old photos, I can’t believe I had hair thaaaat long. Can’t imagine how quickly I went through my shampoos then! 2014 marked the year I went shorter again and loved it! In terms of makeup, can I declare that I’ve been more experimental? On the lips, I went from sweet, angelic pinks to bright oranges and fuschias to deep plums and finally to oxblood reds. I also must note that last year, I’ve been more patient in doing my brows. I usually never spend more than 1 minute on them mostly because they’re a pain to shape, but have to say – 2014 was a good brow year.

Bigger Community

the regular commenters, i love ya’ll!
I’m not sure what the tipping point was, but I felt like my blog grew this year not only in terms of statistics but in terms of community. I’m beyond ecstatic that from 2-3 people (Hi Raven, Sunny, Victoria!) I regularly converse with in the comments – I can now count beyond my fingers those I’ve gotten to know this year — this is the most exciting, exhilarating part for me! So yes, when comments dwindle, I do get a bit affected but of course – I understand that commenting is very time and effort consuming so there aren’t any hard feelings (I just busy myself drafting my novellas to why you don’t comment anymore and when you don’t reply, I have my mini voodoos of you I curse).  But seriously, you know who you are fellow beauty addict, thank you for fueling this by-now-dead blog if it weren’t for our conversations.

The People and Events

Event FULL 2014, indeed!
Ahhhh, beauty events! My first ever beauty event was Benefit’s Big Easy launch. I will always and forever remember my excitement of having been invited to attend – and I still have the same enthusiasm every time a brand sends me an invite! While the events are to be looked forward to in themselves, my favorite part is meeting new people (cliche, but da TRUTH). Those who work in the beauty industry – brand managers, makeup artists; other bloggers – the veterans and my fellow newbies alike. I like exchanging insights with them and learning the history and trends both of the beauty industry and blogging – and how the two things come together.
PS. I also won’t forget the “swatch and drink” day I spent with fellow bloggers Bea, Tellie, Rae, Victoria in Shangri-la where we went around beauty counters to swatch lipsticks and then headed to a German pub to get some beers afterwards. Good times.
sep themistymom-tv-guesting

Look Ma, I’m on TV!

Another highlight last year was my first time to appear on national television! I was shaking so much from nervousness that the studio’s Antarctic-level airconditioning wasn’t helping. It was a short 10-minute TV guesting/interview for ANC Shoptalk where I talked about ways to earn as a blogger while being a full-time mom as well (I may have not been the optimal choice for this topic as I don’t earn millions of $$$$ from it like other bloggers do but it was a fun experience!). I will not link the interview because I’d like to keep what’s left of my dignity, thank you. Haha.

Much Ado About PR

PR-Friendly But Not So Much
If you’ve noticed, I’ve reviewed quite a few PR-sent products the past year and while I deem my blog “PR-friendly”, I’m quite choosy when it comes to accepting which brands to consider (hi to the PR who sends in martial arts press, please read my blog description at least!). I’ve also accepted some sponsored posts that generated income for this blog (trying to recoup my “investments” a.k.a impulsive makeup decisions). I am extremely grateful for these – to just be considered is an honor in itself – so don’t get me wrong when I say that I feel like I’m in limbo right now.
At the back of my mind, something’s pushing me to start being more “professional” about my blog (not in terms of title but more of the attitude – schedule posts, plan ahead, etc. etc). But there’s also a voice in my head saying, “but that’ll lose the spirit of the blog?” (whosever spirit that may be – probably Coke’s since I’ve consumed xx cans while typing out most of my entries).
If I sound like I’m complaining – good Lord, I’m not! I mean, this is a good kind of problem, hopefully a win-win kind. Because I love what I’m doing being a… beauty blogger. There, I said it. I never really said that out loud to anyone in person. Despite the tediousness of taking photographs and the seemingly shallow swatching sessions (where I sometimes ask myself “what the hell am I doing with my life“), I will always be passionate about it. So yes, hopefully this 2015, I will find the balance of how to incorporate PR posts as well with my own personal posts (which I will prioritize over press releases should I feel like doing so) – without feeling like I’ve turned my blog into a soulless beauty-product-selling machine.

Thank you for being a part of my 2014! I only wish to get to know YOU better this coming 2015. I’d love to know what topics you’d like to see more of on the blog — be candid and tell me what you feel, please!

Yiheee! 🙂 Super love this post. A great lookback and ang personal ng dating! 😀 I discovered you back in 2013 pa when I was searching for MAC lipstick swatches, but I don’t usually comment on blogposts then.

Your pictures look super professional kaya, I really like them. Sometimes I say to myself, sino kayang tagapicture ni Shari? I mean pics of yourself when you show lip swatches or face products. Galing kaya. Looking forward to more postsss this 2015! <3

LONG OVERDUE. I wasn’t able to catch Bea rin when she was here – wrong timing/KJ sickness amdist all the festivities! COFFEE/COCKTAILS soon!

I think I started reading your blog when you were still pregnant with Selene. Time flies! Wish you nothing but the best this year. <3

Btw, I saw the link to the ShopTalk vid. Hehe taraaaay! 😛

    • January 9, 2015 / 12:03 am

GURL WHY!!?!?!? Hiya na ako, ayoko na! :’)
But thanks for ‘following’ my journey, Shaunne! Can’t believe the little girl inside my belly is turning two this month! TIME FLIES TALAGA!

  8. January 6, 2015 / 7:36 pm

I can’t remember when I came across your blog Shari but I’m really glad that I did! I’m really happy with what you’ve achieve through blogging 🙂 can’t wait to keep reading more this year – go girl!
P.s love your layout, so easy to read!

    • January 9, 2015 / 12:04 am

Thanks so much for the kind words, Hanh! And thanks for the feedback on my layout! 🙂 I appreciate them!! 🙂 Can’t wait to read more of your adventures this year as well!

  9. January 6, 2015 / 8:04 pm

I’m so happy for you Shari! I admire how hardworking you are not only as a blogger but as a mom, wife, and sister. I’m not even a mom yet, pero with only domestic stuff, I already feel like I have no time. I also don’t have the patience to put a little more thought and creativity into my pictures. The Misty Mom deserves all the traffic and engagement in received in 2014 and I hope it grows more this year.

I’m also happy I finally met you. If you didn’t know yet, I’ve been reading your blog since you were in blogspot (the blog you labeled as “blog ko nung panget pa”, haha, I don’t know if you still remember that), before Selene was born, and I wasn’t even interested in makeup yet (puro cheek tint at tinted moisturizer lang ako nun). I can still remember your bridal shower cake (shaped like a d*ck) and how you organized/ conceptualized your wedding just from pinterest inspirations (ok, di ako stalker ha, I just remember stuff from long ago.)

I may not comment as much (I read blogs on the way to work on my phone), but I’m always here, like a creep 😛

    • Bea
      January 7, 2015 / 4:29 pm

HAHAHAHA Shari this is proof you were always awesome. I wish I’d found your blog even earlier!

      • January 9, 2015 / 12:51 am

HAHAHAHA, thanks Bea! The Misty Mom was so close to becoming an ‘adult’ blog :’)) If it weren’t for those darn MAC lipsticks I got addicted to!

    • January 9, 2015 / 12:21 am

RAE, I want to hug you NOW. AS IN NOW! No exaggerations, I was close to tears while reading your comment :’) Thanks so much!!! I will be rereading this every time I feel down – it’s very motivating and uplifting. Sometimes when I look through my blog and my social media channels, I feel like I’m putting up this pretentious front because everything’s so ‘styled’ and contrived as if I don’t have domestic things to take care of, much less a toddler to raise :)) No one really sees the behind-the-scenes back-breaking time management, trying-to-accomplish-so-much-in-a-day involved. So thank you so much for acknowledging that 🙂 I can’t even begin to imagine how the working moms do it all!

I’m also very pleased to have met you! I admire the way you look at things – and not just in beauty/makeup. You’re easy to get along with and to open up to. I only hope to know you better this year, more coffee dates when you’re free!

And guurrrrl, natawa lang ako na sobrang naaalala niyo pa yung first ever post ko :)) BWAHAHAHAHA! Wish we had been friends then, I could’ve shared that mega cake with you guys! And my Pinterested wedding :)) I even printed stuff out to show to my husband who was taking care of all the preparations then because I was still suffering from morning sickness! Can’t believe 2 years ago na yon! BTW – the blog I was referring to nung panget pa – hindi pa yung blogspot yun. I had countless websites/blogs since i was 10 yrs old from Geocities, Xanga, Livejournal, even those hosted on different personal domains – sana hindi mo naman yun naabutan! Mas nakakaloka pa mga laman non a.k.a mababaw na kadramahan ko nung teenager pa ko! :)) HAHA!

      • January 13, 2015 / 4:01 am

Awww, Shari, I didn’t know that you feel this way — that there’s some sort of misalignment in the areas of your life.

I’ve always seen blogs as an entity in itself. It is the blogger but not entirely so, and that doesn’t mean they’re ‘pretentious’. Most people can read between the lines and I like to believe that it’s not just me who’s seeing it this way. Otherwise, wala nang pag-asa ang internet. Hehehe.

        • January 13, 2015 / 9:51 am

Rae, you aren’t alone in that kind of thinking – but there are surely MORE that are in the other side. I even have some ASKs that prove this thinking. I would like to think they aren’t rude, just genuinely curious, but they have this illusion I’m just a ‘sitting pretty’ mom/housewife lang. And some even push that I should get a job.

  10. January 6, 2015 / 8:21 pm

Congrats to a great year in blogging! I always get excited when I see your new posts pop up on my newsfeed. Even though I don’t get to comment as much as I used to (due to entering the *real world* and getting a job dun dun dun haha) I always visit your site and read your latest entries. You’ll forever be my fave beauty blogger! Cheers to you and more blessings to come for the misty mom this 2015! <3 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 12:57 am

Shyucks, thanks Eileen! :’) Kilig naman ako! But yes, no worries on not commenting – I’ve a voodoo of you to keep me company whenever I wonder where the hell you are! 😉 And I hope you’re enjoying the ‘real world’!! Congratulations on your job – I wish you success in whatever field you entered! 🙂 Cheers to you too darling and more blessings for you this year as well!

      • January 10, 2015 / 12:05 am

Haha! Thanks so much Shari! You’re the sweetest! 🙂

It’s been 2 years!! I hope you’ll keep on going and growing! I wouldn’t know what to do without your blog. I started reading it when I just began delving into makeup. Reading your blog made me venture into it even further. And reading your first post always makes me giggle. MEGA D!!! I also remember when you would post simple OOTDS showing off your baby bump. Maybe next year (or this year!), you’ll be having those again. 😉 You’ve come so far as a blogger and a mom to Selene! Keep doing what you’re doing! You’ve built such an amazing community and it’s crazy amazing that you interact with us and talk like we’re all long-time makeup-crazy friends. <3

Hopefully 2015 will be the year that we finally get to meet up. I think it's long overdue!

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:03 am

My staunch reader and commenter ever since the beginning of this addiction :)) I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOUR NEW BLOG, can I just say! I hope this time you don’t ever close it – even if you have no time to update it because SCHOOL FIRST DEAR! I love the name too – super witty! The Makeup Raven! SNAPS!!! And grabe, MEGA D! :)) GURL NAALALA MO PA! Kayo ni Rae! Nakakatawa! Glad my first post was memorable – maybe The Misty Mom could’ve been about adult stuff ala 50 Shades of Grey :)) Pero if reading my blog (that went the makeup route) made you venture into makeup, nako, never mind! HAHAHAHA! And ikaw ha, kaloka, sibling for Selene ang wish mo saken this 2015! I can’t imagine raising this fiery little girl and nursing a newborn at the same time!! WE’LL SEE~ JOKE! But seriously, thank you for being my blog reader BFF, I HOPE TO MEET YOU SOON K!!! Sa summer vacation mo, book na yan!

  12. January 6, 2015 / 8:49 pm

Quiet a nice year and I love the simplicity & nice writing of your posts
Looking forward to awesome 2015 for you 🙂

  13. January 6, 2015 / 8:58 pm

Really liked this post, Shari! It’s really interesting to read your thoughts and opinions regarding a lot of topics. It was really informative too since I’m still new to blogging. Hope that 2015 is an even better year for you! 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:25 am

Thanks so much and glad to be of help, Pauline! I hope you continue blogging 🙂 Wishing you a great 2015 ahead as well :*

Great roundup, Shari! Has been such a pleasure following your blog this year. Looking forward to what you have to bring in 2015 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:26 am

It has been my pleasure following yours too! I live vicariously through your beautiful picks since I’ve started buying less 🙂 Can’t wait to see your picks for this year Jen!

  15. January 6, 2015 / 11:03 pm

Hey Shari, happy 2015!!! I think I’ve been reading The Misty Mom for over a year now, and I’ve always enjoyed your great sense of style and stunning photos! I know what you mean about the PR thing. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll one day crack with the pressure of blogging about one new release after another, but for the most part, I am so grateful that I get new toys to play with and the PRs never seem to mind me saying what I really think. Life is complicated, no? Bloggers vie for PR attention, but once you get it, there are actually so many decisions to make!

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:29 am

Over a year indeed, Sunny! I remember last year, you were one of my top commenters – I only wish to even be half as diligent and hardworking as you when it comes to blogging. You are such a pro at it! And you’re one of the very few blogs I love reading despite the PR products because GOOD LORD, all the PR products you receive I’m generally interested in anyway! The Guerlains, Diors and Chanels and everything else! I wish Tom Ford sent you as well because Im interested to hear your reviews on them! 🙂 Plus, the way you write about them is genuine and not run-off-the-mill. I only hope for more success for Mostly Sunny this coming year!

      • January 9, 2015 / 1:38 am

Aww thanks, Shari! I don’t have a child and I think that’s the difference :p We only get TF lipsticks and nail polishes here, and they don’t really do PR. I wish they did as well LOL

  16. January 7, 2015 / 3:05 am

So happy to have found your blog, Shari! Your pictures and content are always beautiful, but most of all, I appreciate you for staying true to yourself and not being one of those bloggers hungry for money or fame. I went into blogging to honestly show my love for beauty and the beauty industry and it’s refreshing to know that you’re in the same boat as I am.

    Cheers to 2015!

    xx Alyson
    The Beauty Vanity

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:32 am

Thank you Alyson for the sweet words 🙂 And we are on the same boat – our love for beauty and the industry prevails overall. When someone’s in it for the money/fame, there’s no fault to that at all – but it’ll definitely be hard to motivate oneself if at the end of it all (despite the $$$$ and popularity), they’re not passionate about what they’re doing. Here’s to a more beauty-filled 2015 for us!

  17. January 7, 2015 / 5:22 am

You are one of my most visited and favorite blogs! I love everything you write, really. You also stay true to yourself and what I love is the personal touch. You don’t just blog about everything sent to you and you always share knowledge, tips and beautiful pictures! I am looking forward to everything that you will post. Hehe. Take Care, and more power, Shari! <3

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:35 am

THANKS JUVY MY LOVE!:* Such motivating words, kakakilig! Appreciate them a lot! I also wish you the best of luck in your career, personal life and of course blogging life! I always like seeing FOTDs popping up on my feed from you because you’re very skilled in putting on makeup (gurl, your eyeshadow blending!!) – cheers to a more fruitful and beauty-filled 2015 for us!

  18. January 7, 2015 / 10:27 am

As I type this, I am laughing so hard about the martial arts press release! Hahahahahahahaa my goodness what were they thinking?!!! Hahahahaha

2014 definitely sounds like a great year for you, Shari! I am happy for you for all the opportunities you have been given! I’m sure it’s a lot of fun meeting new people especially those who are as crazy about makeup as you!

Here’s to hoping for an even more awesome 2015!! <3

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:37 am

For future self-defense, Jaa! Beauty bloggers need to learn how to kick real ass! :)) Do you need lessons? I’ll forward your email and blog! Hahaha! Wishing you a more awesome 2015 as well, dear!

  19. January 7, 2015 / 6:09 pm

It was great to have stumbled upon your blog in 2014! Can’t wait to finally meet you in person this year, hihi. :3

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:38 am

ERIKA! Congrats on your beautiful baby girl!! 🙂 Looking forward to reading more mom posts from you! Brace yourself for the sleepless nights! Just always remind yourself: this too shall pass. I’m here should you need anyone to talk to re: mom stuff, post-baby blues, etc!

  20. January 7, 2015 / 8:16 pm

I’m so glad to be following your blog, Jenn! Yours is one of the more entertaining beauty blogs I thoroughly enjoy reading word per word! I can’t wait to see what ABZ has in store for us this 2015! MORE DAVID VIDEOS AND GUEST POSTS! Always interested to hear men’s opinions on beauty products!

      • January 9, 2015 / 1:51 am

thanks for all the compliments 🙂 ! glad we’re blog friends 🙂

  21. January 7, 2015 / 9:00 pm

Hello, Shari! I’m new here, and looking at your photo collage, I’m like: WAIT, WHA~ SHE’S A MOM?! You seriously don’t look like you’ve had a child! I’m sorry if I sound ridiculous, but you look so young to be one. (And I mean that in a good way!)

More power to you and your blog(s)!

    Cheers,
    Jae, The SCATTERBRAIN

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:42 am

Hi Jae!! Because of your comment, I had backread a few of your entries and am officially hooked! I’m so amazed with your love story – LDR is a difficult thing so I’m def impressed with how you and your husband made it work! So inspiring 🙂 Can’t wait to read more from you this year! Good luck on everything 🙂 And hihi, thanks for the compliments! I BLUSH!

      • January 9, 2015 / 9:06 am

Whoa! Being in an LDR for more than half of the time that we’re together is tough especially when you’re already married! I wouldn’t recommended it to anyone, really. Thank you so much, Shari! 🙂

  22. January 8, 2015 / 10:33 am

Happy 2015, Shari! 2014 was definitely a fruitful year for you, and I wish you even more of that for this new year. PR samples and sponsored posts are flattering for any blogger, because it means you’ve reached that status of relevance that so many look to you to influence their future purchases. It’s a wonderful thing, but I hope you never lose the spirit of your blog. The natural wittiness of the way you right in exchange for sounding like a press release? Huwag naman sana. It’s a joy to discover and get hooked on you blog, so please keep the essence of that alive forevaaah. Hehehe. :))

Seriously though, keep up the amazing work. 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:45 am

Hi Marielle! Thank you so much for the sweet words :’) I really appreciate your observations and feedback! I shall do my best to preserve my spirit (a.k.a kabaliwan HAHAHA) in my writing. I always love seeing your name pop up here because most of the time (if not all!), your inputs always bring more insight to the post/review/entry. I love reading your finds on your blog, too – so I hope you don’t lose interest in blogging as well! Here’s to a great 2015 ahead! :*

    January 8, 2015 / 11:55 am

LOL at martial arts press. I’ve received some pretty random ones myself and they were total WTF moments.
I’m so happy to have discovered your blog this year, and I’m looking forward to more awesomeness from you 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:48 am

Ahhh Lily! Thanks so much 🙂 Your blog is always a treat to read – I feel like we’re just at a coffee shop and you’re sharing your thoughts on beauty products candidly to me. Yes, only to me. HAHA! I admire your dedication to blogging despite having three little darlings to take care of – you are officially my PEG! 🙂 Here’s to more “coffee shop conversations” this 2015! 🙂

    • January 9, 2015 / 1:48 am

Joyce, as I said, I would like to keep what’s left of my dignity so I won’t be sharing it :))) HAHAHAHA!

  24. January 8, 2015 / 5:58 pm

    This is what I personally
love about this blog right here. It feels so personal to read like I’m just
listening to a friend talking. And yeah it’s not a “soulless
beauty-product-selling machine” like some other blogs out there with all
the same contents and products. Whenever I feel like reading a blog,
themistymom.com is always my first choice. I type the domain without needing to
scroll on my feeds anymore. I hope you can have a makeup workshop or meet and
greet session with your readers this year. I’ll be there! 😉 Happy new year,

I have to say, I’m really pleased that I discovered your blog last year, and looked past the gorgeous blog template (IDK, I JUST FIND THAT CERTAIN BLOG TEMPLATES MAKE CERTAIN BLOGGERS LOOK SNOBBY/SNOOTY) because your blog is A+ in terms of content (those jokes be solid tho; and that photography??? RUDE ;-;) and blog layout. Also, that photoset of your hair = hair porn. I should probably make 2015 the year that I actually work on my brows, and AYYY! CONGRATS ON MAKING IT TO THE SMALL SCREEN!

Your blog has always been my fave. I love reading your high-end & drugstore makeup reviews. Especially those Tom Ford e/s quads. Oh em… Anyway, keep it up Shari. Oh and your layout is sooo pretty <33
