My Bespoke Hair Session with Juro Salon Exclusif

juro-salon-manilaNice head shape!” were the first three words I heard from Jude Hipolito that day as he was analyzing my hair. That’s a new one. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that observation from a stylist (or any other person) before. I instantly thought to myself, “this guy knows hair“. Touted as the Master of Bespoke Hairstyling and Precision Cutting, he spoke in the most non-intimidating way – as if he was just a Tito (uncle) – a Tito who was about to transform and give life to my dying, dry and damaged hair. A brief background, Juro Salon is made up of the power tandem Jude, haircut master and Rosecolor savant who are notoriously known for their “magic“. What magic? You’ll see below. But to give you an idea of how they operate – Jude and Rose are the only hair stylist and colorist (respectively) in the salon. They don’t employ any other stylists – they do the haircuts and coloring themselves. juro-before-hairjuro-salon I’m sure with the success of their salon which has been operating for more than 10 years now, they could’ve expanded, popped up branches here and there and just milked $$$ from their famous names. But they didn’t. They chose to stick with only one branch where they can personally do all their beloved clients’ tresses. If that’s not dedication people, I don’t know what is. They just truly enjoy their craft and it shows in their work and in their personalities.

The Cut

So after Jude examined my hair condition, face and head shape, he asked me, “So what do you want to do with it today?” Inside, I was thinking chop it all off but what came out was, “Ahhh errrr, ummm, well…. I could go shorter, like really short.” But instead of trusting that barely-a-sentence response, Jude sensed my hesitation and said, “Okay, we could go shorter.. but not too short. We’ll just trim off the unhealthy parts and frame your face with layers suited to your shape.” And with that I just replied, “I leave it all up to you, Master.” Okay, so I didn’t really say Master! But I must as well have. I like that Jude really took into consideration my face shape (and even my head shape!) for the cut. I was sure it wasn’t just a run-off-the-mill haircut he had already mastered and executed on all his other clients. You know, those kind of cuts that are done in just 5-10 minutes. I like that I felt that the cut he was doing was specifically tailor-made for me. Another thing I enjoyed about the cut is also learning bits and pieces about Jude. Before all this, he was immersed in the corporate world. Armed with an MBA from a reputable school in the US, he could’ve been on top of the corporate ladder by now (from my own interpolation, not his words). But after 10 years in, he had a change of heart. He found himself enjoying learning the ins and outs of hairstyling from his brother who had a salon – and from there, one half of JuRo was born. He came back to the Philippines, met the love of his life, Rose – then a top L’Oreal Color Educator – which was like a match made in Hair Heaven, and JuRo was officially complete. juro-salon-hair-after After around 25 minutes of Jude cutting my hair while I was seated and standing up – this was the result, no heat styling whatsoever. Goodbye dry, dying hair – it certainly looked more alive and healthier, right? One thing Jude said stuck with me to this day, “Why sport long hair if it’s not healthy?” I mean, yes, you look good with long hair – but if it’s all split-endy, frizzy and essentially crying to be cut off, what’s the point? Amen, brotha! And with that, I just felt more sure that shorter hair was indeed meant for me. juro-before1juro-before-1juro-salon-review

Color

Next battle was to repair my brassy, coppery hair color. As mentioned above, Rose is a Senior Color Educator at L’Oreal before JuRo. I only requested for ”ash-toned brown hair” and right away, she concocted a mix of INOA and Majirel Cool Cover shades that would suit my skintone. Something that wouldn’t wash me out but rather make my skin look like it’s glowing against it. Woman is a chemist-slash-artist at work! It takes artistic vision to know what hair color goes well for different skintones and personalities –  as well as the technical knowledge to be able to concoct that exact, customized shade. Most (not all) colorists just let us point to the color we want in the Color Chart and then go ahead using that exact shade (or a few shades lighter) on us. No, you guys. Without enlisting the use of bleach, it takes math (proper proportions) and chemistry (mixing of different chemicals) to achieve the right hair color/shade/tone depending on your hair color at present. After almost 4 hours warming up my comfy seat in the house, below is the beautiful, amazing result. Now THAT is ASH, people! #ShakeThatAsh, sorry couldn’t resist. This is the exact tone I’ve been wanting for so long which was almost achieved by my previous well-loved salon but missed by a tone or two. I was so happy with how the base color, highlights and their corresponding tones turned out – I wanted to hug Rose right after. Call it Magic, Call it True

I left the salon that day beaming from ear to ear. All those women raving about the duo’s magic? All completely true! No exaggeration here, folks. Jude and Rose really know their craft yet they never stop learning despite their expert-level skills and knowledge. They continue to attend seminars abroad and then share these knowledge by training their staff. Moreover, they give back to the community by teaching teenage orphans basic and advanced haircutting through their Power of Scissors program. I’ve never felt such genuine care and level of involvement from any other salon. I’m not surprised that they have a loyal list of clientele that keep coming back – they’re even styling three generations of family members already. Stepping into JuRo for them must feel like coming home. For me, it was like being able to save up for a designer bag or pair of shoes. Only you invest in your hair, which you only have one set of and which can be seen everyday by everyone (and you don’t get to change up unless you go for wigs). Deciding to have your hair done at JuRo isn’t a gamble. “Will I like my cut? Will they get the color I want? It’s a sure thing. And there aren’t a lot of “sure things” in this world anymore. But I’m willing to bet every strand of my hair on them. juro-salon-after juro-salon-after2

Post-Washing

The real test of a good haircut is how it looks after you’ve washed off the carefully styled blowdry. And this is it, folks. I washed my hair using my favorite shampoo/conditioner, Pureology, and just blow dried it hastily with my fingers after. I can’t use a roller brush with the hairdryer to save my life. All I can say is – I’ve never imagined I can achieve this kind of low-maintenance hair by just getting the right haircut. So easy to manage that I don’t need to tie it up all the time to hide the deadness. Absolutely in love with short hair. I’m even tempted to go even shorter next time! Above the shoulder, maybe. Thank you Jude and Rose for this bespoke hair styling session. You were extremely busy and packed that Thursday (I sat beside Paulo Avelino, you guys, in sando! I don’t even like him but I gotta admit, I was starstruck LOL) but you were still so accommodating and warm that I wanted to live in your salon. Hahaha! I swear, I’ll curb on my other expenses when I feel like it’s time to get my hair cut again. Priorities!

Love your haircut, Shari! I just had a haircut recently as well because I can’t stand my hair anymore – I always tie it up just so I wouldn’t see it! My roots are terrible but I can’t have it dyed yet. Can’t wait for my baby girl to finally come out so I could finally give my hair the loving it deserves!

I didn’t know that a change in color would do so much for a person! While the first one made you look warmer, this one really does balance out your skin tone and makes you look glowing. So pretty ♡_♡

It looks so great on you! I’m seriously contemplating chopping off my hair because of our bi-polar weather. Unfortunately, I’ve been growing my hair out for 2 years and I don’t want to wait another two. Hmmm perhaps after my prom. Really digging that length so I might go that short. 😉 We’ll see where the wind takes me.

I do love your new hair so much! I love the ash colour and the shorter yet richly textured hair. I think your hairstylist really knows about hair from that comment of his. My stylist also analyzes hair very thoroughly to know the current state of the hair before performing his magic. I do love stylist like these. I like how Juse and ROse do everything themselves! Certainly give customers lots of confidence.

Thank you for your comment on my blog a while back. I love seeing newcomers around and I’m looking forward to seeing you more often.

Sooo pretty and shiny! The color brought out a glowing tan. Omg, they’re miracle workers. Kailangan ko rin ng miracle to afford. Haha.

I usually give the stylist a lot of say into what my hair should be cut into, but I think Jude is the type of guy you just put 100% faith and trust in without having second thoughts or fear that the session might go south.
