Most Used and Abused List #1

mostabused It’s time to check up on Project Pan and see where I am in terms of using up makeup. I wish this were an Empties post, to be honest. Sigh. I’ve been holding off on any new makeup purchases for some time now because I recently tried to organize my makeup (operative word: tried) and was appalled upon realizing I’ve accumulated a shit ton of products in two years time which I’m nowhere near using up in the next ten years or so.  So while the high of having new makeup is extremely and utterly addicting (it even seems as if the feeling is what I crave more than the products themselves) — I think I’ve reached the stage where I need to re-evaluate my purchases and ask myself if I’m actually going to use the product or am I just sucked in to buying it because.. SHINY! PRETTY! BEAUTIFUL EMBOSSING! I’M SURE I DON’T HAVE THAT ONE YET! I also need to work on emotional purchases. Those times when I feel “down” a.k.a time of the month where everything just makes you feel irritable, stressed and sad and of course the only rational solution to induce some kind of happiness is logging in to my Sephora or Nordstrom account, start browsing through the What’s New, What’s Hot. And poof, before I know it — I’m entering card details. But then again, I’m not a robot and I can’t program myself to just switch that “THINK AGAIN, BEEE” button automatically because let’s face it — the lure of pretty, shiny things is just too strong sometimes. And since I’m in this mindset where every new makeup purchase needs to be justified, I’m finally setting a day to take photos of items I will have to purge from the stash. I know. A blog sale sounds counter-intuitive to my goal of being a “smarter” consumer —because letting go of old items means I’ve just cleared some space to buy new ones WOOHOO!! But that’s where my new um, “makeup journey”, actually begins or so I’d like to convince myself. Now that I’ve all the space to fill (thinking I will be able to sell all my purged stuff) — will I replenish it with SHINY! PRETTY! items I’ll touch every 6 months? Or will I be replacing it with just one or two new ones that’ll be of actual use to me? And maybe a vase filled with fresh flowers on the remaining space to use for blog photos. LOL

Hah. Such big words and promises. Let’s see what actually happens. Anyway, on to the most abused list!

The Almost-to-the-Pan Products
Chanel Quad in Spices. This was a hand-me-down from my mom way way back and I think it took three years for it to reach pan (not of daily usage, though). I haven’t used this in the past year but back when it was probably the only eyeshadow quad I had, this quad was all I ever used. And that was when I didn’t know about contouring the eyes, too – hence only used up the peachy and beige-pink shades. NARS Laguna. No secret that this is probably the only contour powder I’ve been using for two years now! I didn’t even want to try any other powders because this just works great for my skintone. However, since hitting pan, I’ve finally decided to try out another contour product – a cream one this time – which you can read about here. Tom Ford Spanish Pink. I think I used this everyday for two months a while back, but the bullet mess isn’t because of that, it’s actually because I dropped it on the floor while taking a photo of it. One of my favorite pinks, ever. Hands down. MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre. My HG (I don’t throw this around often but when I do, I mean it) when it comes to eyeshadow application. I don’t think I’d be loving eyeshadow now if I didn’t discover the priming wonders of this paint pot. It cancels out my yellowish eyelid tones as well as mattifies them. Will repurchase this over and over. MAC Dirty Blonde Brow Gel Creme. For perfectly defined brows, this is my go-to. I’m almost to the pan but sadly, it’s beginning to dry up recently. Ugh. I super love this, but am willing to try out something new after I finish this up or once it has dried out completely – whichever happens first. NARS Gina Blush. A light tangerine shade that just looks good with anything! I usually alternate between a few pink blushes, but I only have one true tangerine/peach blush which is why this is super abused. See how it looks on me here. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light. Ugh, by default this looks abused because I dropped the compact (which was still in the box!) when I purchased it in store. It wasn’t this damaged when it happened, only a slight vein of crack that didn’t seem harmless at all. I never dropped it again but the more I used it, the more the crack wanted to show itself. Sigh.

How about you guys? Any makeup items you’ve hit pan on / used up / dropped and cracked recently? Do share!

Girl, why do you keep dropping your makeup! :3 Spanish Pink is hands down, the prettiest shade of pink EVER.

PS Blog sale? Yay your first customer = me 😀

    • August 11, 2014 / 12:48 pm

Wala eh, klutz talaga :(( Huhu. And yes to Spanish Feeenk!! Always on the lookout for dupes on that shade.

And yay what are you looking to purchase ba if ever? Cos I’m working on the blog sale na!

  2. August 8, 2014 / 4:40 pm

Ugh that Mood light compact is making my heart bleed right now!! 😛 I recently hit pan on my Tarte Exposed blush (yay!) and finished up a few MAC products which will soon be going back to the store! I am pretty bad at finishing things up and no lipstick ever has been finished! That Spanish pink is on my list but Tom Ford is a distant dream!!

I am the same when it comes to chopping, and have been keeping myself from going to any department store or even surfing online (by watching movies instead when I am free :P) and that ha shelped.. I think eventually I’d get over the emotional shopping bit (at least) and just get wiser with respect to consuming things and buying! Lets see! fingers crossed! 😀

Hi DIV! Just ate all my words re: this blog post after my shameful Chanel purchases LOL.
I should busy myself with watching series, etc. too but I guess when I get on the laptop, it’s either I blog, read other blogs or… hop on over to Nordies or Sephora 🙁 Anyway, I’m glad I’ve fellow beauty-obsessed friends like you to commiserate with and venture on changing bad shopping habits with LOL!

My Diffused Light cracked too!! So much more than yours. I didn’t even drop it! >:( Just sropped my drawer where it was in lol. I’ve hit pan on this my MAC Studiofix. Finally!! And I’ve been steadily abusing Lorac Pro. 6 pans and counting!

Anastasia Dipbrow in Soft Brown is calling to youuuuu.. 😉

    Blog sale? Yes please!

    • August 11, 2014 / 12:52 pm

YAH!! I remember you saying your Diffused Light cracking rin. And you didnt even drop it pala?! Kainis! They really are fragile. Anyway, WHOA WHOA WHOA at 6 pans! Proud of you, Rayray!!

  4. August 8, 2014 / 4:54 pm

Haha, I love this post. Your products look battered but I somehow like the picture because that proves that they are well-loved, beside the fact that you dropped some of them but let us leave that out of the way! 😉

I’m intrigued to get that Gina blush but I’m wondering if it’s not too light for my skin complexion. Love the other products that were featured in this post especially Nars Laguna, I need to repurchase that!

Aw shucks DIOR! 🙁 We must learn to be more cautious when handling our makeup, yes? Especially those that costs $$$ :((

  5. August 8, 2014 / 5:56 pm

I am always impressed with posts which shows product abuse, love them. It truly shows what made it to your heart. Spices Quad is for sure a classics and I can’t agree more about TF Spanish Pink.

    • August 11, 2014 / 12:56 pm

Aww thanks Sara! 🙂 One of my beauty resolutions I’m keen on doing this year! Spices is such a no-brainer everyday kind of palette!

  6. August 8, 2014 / 7:07 pm

I had to clean out my stash a few months ago and was appalled myself. I ended up tossing, giving away and selling the majority of it. How I curbed buying more is I got rid of my big storage containers, that was I wasn’t as tempted. I also started using natural products, which are harder to find, so that makes it easier too.

    • August 11, 2014 / 12:57 pm

I should try to go the route of natural products too but then again that might lead to a whole new ‘must build up my natural product collection’ mindset :)) But I love that you’re on this path now, Arielle! Should I go down the path as well, I’ll check your posts for sure 🙂

  7. August 8, 2014 / 9:51 pm

Pity about the crack on your Hourglass powder! It’s annoying when that happens to such expensive (and beautiful) products. I’ve heard so many good things about the Tom Ford lipstick in Spanish Pink, I think I need to invest in it (and Wild Ginger). Especially now that someone with an Asian skin tone is singing praises too! I like your idea of being a smarter consumer, I’m trying too. x

    • August 11, 2014 / 12:59 pm

Wild Ginger, ugh! So beautiful but can’t see myself getting a lot of use out of it so I’ve been holding out. But it’s such a bright, bold shade I’d love to have the confidence to wear out most of the time! Good luck on both our ‘smarter consumer’ journey, Mich!

  8. August 8, 2014 / 9:59 pm

I used to have the Chanel Spices quad as well but it was inside the makeup kit that got stolen from me a few years ago 🙁

    • August 11, 2014 / 1:00 pm

Aw shucks, sayang naman yon! 🙁 That’s why I’m quite hesitant to bring $$$ makeup with me when I go out cos you never know, right?

  9. August 8, 2014 / 10:11 pm

Am I crazy for thinking the cracks in the Hourglass powder look cool?! Very magazine shoot editorial. I am proud of your pan-hitting and completely relate to going through my stash and feeling like, “Did I really need that?!”. I too have items set aside for a blog sale. I have hit pan on the setting powder I used in late winter and any time I want a true matte finish, YSL Matt + Radiant Pressed Powder. I wasn’t even trying, it just happened and I was gleeful. I still have months of uses before it’s all gone, but seeing that bit of metal made me happy. I have been trying ruthlessly to hit pan on my Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer but still NO PAN. I use it every single day and I’ve had it for 1.5 yrs! I can’t believe the pan is still eluding me!

    • August 11, 2014 / 1:10 pm

HAHAHA I should’ve taken an artsy shot, wait lemme try. HERE:

Congrats on panning YSL Matt Radiant powder!! I’ve used up a MAC Blot Powder before and hit pan on a MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Powder but threw it before I completely finished it up. And wow, Too Faced Chocolate Soleil sounds like it’s worth every cent when it doesnt hit pan despite everyday usage!! But I know how frustrating that is when you just want to finish it up already! :)) 1.5 years and counting.. WOW!!

I haven’t made a dent in anything except perhaps my foundation so my hat off to you for having made such head way with your makeup. I totally live for the heady feeling of new makeup but like you I know I can’t do it for long. I’m slowing down but I still pick up stuff every once in a while. I dropped my fav MUFE pro finish powder a few weeks back, I am afraid it will break into a gazillion pieces so now it’s destined to stay in my cupboard but I still use it everyday. Perhaps I’ll make a dent on that eventually.

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:06 am

I guess we all plateau on the ‘makeup high’ after a while 🙂 And then after a while, we start to feel the itch and before we know, we’re starting all over again! It’s a vicious cycle, Jacq! I’m proud of you as well for slowing down 🙂 I know it isn’t so easy – I guess the trick is to just put out all your makeup on one table and just stare at how many you have that you wont be able to use up in this lifetime! Well that most of the time, works for me! UNLESS I’m in a counter and have all these SAs testing these products on my face and seeing them on me under the counter lights.. UGH!

  11. August 9, 2014 / 12:22 am

I’m the exact same way- totally a sucker for gorgeous packaging and for emotional buys. These are some lovely products you’ve used up here- I’ve seen so many people finish up a Laguna- I really need to give it a go! Have a lovely weekend, Shari 🙂

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:22 am

I’ve been managing my emotional buys quite well lately! But been having a hard time when I visit counters – especially when you try on a product, see it on yourself and you like what you see! Damn those flattering counter lights and the illusions they give, HAHAHA. But yes, I’ve been avoiding beauty counters and stores recently as well so as not to get tempted and sucked in to the swatching and instant liking! :))

  12. August 9, 2014 / 2:29 am

I <3 looking at used stuff. And, call me weird, I like putting a dent on embossings and etc.

"A blog sale sounds counter-intuitive to my goal of being a “smarter” consumer —because letting go of old items means I’ve just cleared some space to buy new ones WOOHOO!" — This is me!!! Letting go isn't the problem, shopping is!

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:25 am

I like seeing pan and dents, too! Except for some products that are hard to come by and expensive (case in point: my Burberry highlighter). On the other hand, my goal for the remaining year is to put a dent on my eyeshadows (all of them PLS!!), finish up two tubes of lipstick and hit pan on one blush. Good luck lang. Oh and stop replacing things. Well, kamusta naman – no blog sale yet but kinda went a lil crazy on a few Chanel things na. #confessionsofamakeupaddict

  13. August 9, 2014 / 7:31 am

Ugh, I totally get what you mean! Sometimes I feel like it’s so hard to let go of makeup (swaps, blog sales) because it’s so darn PRETTY and I wanna keep it to myself even though I don’t use it often enough to justify keeping it. I feel like I’m taking a step forward by swapping some makeup with a blog friend haha.

I’ve made a pretty noticeable dent in my D&G blush in tan and I’m happy about it since it means I didn’t drop ~$40 on something I won’t use – though I’m sad at the same time since it means I’m that much closer to repurchasing it 😛

    xx becky // star-violet

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:09 am

That is a huge step indeed, Becky! I should probably do a blog swap too. 🙂

OOOOH I know a lot of people who’ve hit pan on D&G Tan!!! Now I’m more intrigued to find out what all the fuss is about!

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:09 am

It is indeed! 🙂 And thank you!

  14. August 9, 2014 / 11:51 am

A blog sale is most definitely in order. However, that is the thing. Once you let go of all the unused products that you have lying around, you can’t help but feel the need to fill up the void in your makeup drawers hahaha. You can control yourself, though. Kaya mo yan! Isipin mo lang, wala kang pera :p

PS. You bought the Hourglass powder in store? Wheeere?

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:11 am

Make Up Pro in Makati 🙂 They also have in QC.
And yes, thank you for the motivation/encouragement gurl!

  15. August 10, 2014 / 8:16 pm

meee tooo (the accumlating and not being able to use up even past death)

i’m rounding things up for a blog sale (its gonna be a big one i think…)

i haven’t dropped anything but one of my mufe eyeshadows spontaneously cracked? (maybe i laid down the pan too hard one day??? i have nooo idea). i repressed it though. i do that for any powder product that has smashed and thankfully nothing expensive has.

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:17 am

Oooh, cant wait to see things from your blog sale Jenn!! Must resist getting any though, but will definitely help you spread the word! 🙂

Another MUFE massacre, lol. Jacq below had cracked her MUFE powder as well 🙂 I repressed my MAC blush that I dropped too but it just didn’t work as well as Pinterest illustrated it. Huhu. It just looks like a volcano ready to erupt but then decided not to so you see mounds of blush over in this side and none on the other. 🙁 Dont know if that made sense LOL!

Oh and is this a book recommendation? RE: Cuckoo’s calling 😉

      • August 12, 2014 / 7:25 pm

totally makes sense! i had to repress a lot of blushes lol since i went on a mad depotting spree. that, added with my lack of patience, meant 5 blush casualties !!!! all which i repressed into lumpy weirdly color mixed solids….they’re so ugly hahah.

  16. August 11, 2014 / 2:53 am

It’s a bit comforting to know I’m not the only one suffering (yes, suffering LOL) through an all-consuming makeup addiction. Like you, I think I have enough makeup to last me for the next ten years! It’s crazy, but I really can’t stop buying more (especially when new collections come out and they just look WOW). 🙁

We must get ourselves checked into rehab, gurl! Haha. Thankfully, I’ve slowed down the past few months but it’s been a constant effort. I had to keep on reminding myself I don’t need it or have one just like it! I also avoid going to beauty counters altogether just so I don’t even get tempted — so hard to resist if it’s already on your face and you like how it appears on you! :))

  17. August 12, 2014 / 10:21 am

I get the whole “letting go of old items means I’ve just cleared some space to buy new ones”. I feel you and your pain(?) Shari. Haha. I do wish I can control my impulses more especially when something new is very much approved by other bloggers. The urge to try it out myself is so strong.

    • August 12, 2014 / 11:20 am

Pain is an understatement, Nikki! Haha #TheStruggleIsReal
But yes, it’s so hard to resist talaga. It’s such an addiction – well at least we’re not hooked on drugs. Haha. Even though they’re both $$$$ vices, lol.

  18. August 13, 2014 / 8:53 pm

my heart sank when i saw the cracked mood light powder. that happened to me once with a limited edition bronzer that i love. i wanted to cry hehe! im interested to see which items will go up on your blog sale shari if you make one 🙂

  19. August 14, 2014 / 8:15 am

Good luck with your project pan – I know how frustrating it is to feel so helpless when it comes to pretty products and checking out my cart with products that I don’t need.

I agree wholeheartedly about blog sales too – I thought I was doing well, until I realized my blog posts tend to be cluttered with hauls!

Great post Shari! And I totally understand you when you say that you crave the feeling of having new makeup more than the products themselves! I too have a problem with accumulating makeup and realizing I haven’t used them as much as I should! Perhaps I should start on Project Pan as well! 🙂
