Did I Find My Perfect Nude with L’Oreal Collection Star Lipsticks?

lorealcollectionstar5 I’ve recently received a beautiful set of Asia-exclusive lipsticks by L’Oreal called the Collection Star* by Colour Riche. Each shade is inspired by 5 beautiful ladies who are L’Oreal Beauty Ambassadors namely Doutzen Kroes, Jennifer Lopez, Fan Bingbing, Gong Li and Sonam Kapoor. The box states that it’s specially designed for Asia, yet I was a bit perplexed for a moment as to why Doutzen Kroes and Jennifer Lopez were chosen as inspirations. I realized that they probably wanted to illustrate the diversity of skin tones all over Asia. While both of Chinese descent, Fan Bingbing is pale almost paper white and Gong Li is fair with slight yellow undertone. Jennifer Lopez who is of Puerto Rican descent is still fair but with golden undertones. Sonam Kapoor is Indian with yellow-to-olive medium skin tone. And Victoria’s Secret Angel, Doutzen Kroes is pure Dutch and has fair skin with pink undertones — probably representative of the mixed Eurasian beauties all over Asia. So yes, I love that all the undertones were represented but 4/5 of them are really quite fair. Sonam Kapoor is probably closest to my skintone, although I lean a bit more yellow than golden. If I were two shades up the MAC foundation system, I’d probably be close to Gong Li.. but I’m not. Anyway, with that alone, I was already quite hesitant in finding the perfect nude for me in this kit. But, I still pursued the challenge! lorealcollectionstar4blorealcollectionstar1

The Lowdown on the Formula

L’Oreal Collection Star lipsticks are part of the Colour Riche lipstick range. I’ve personally never tried any Colour Riche lipsticks yet but they are supposed to be luxuriously rich in color with intensely rich hydration for a creamy, moisturizing, and pigmented lipstick formula. Well these aren’t super pigmented in one go — most of them take two-three swipes on the lips to show up opaque, but even then most are still quite sheer in coverage. They are creamy, but sadly to the point where they accentuate lip lines and dry patches. They go on very lightweight though and not at all heavy in feel like those Revlon Lip Butters of yesterday. These don’t bleed or feather at all either, so applying without a mirror is doable. In fact, these lipsticks do quite feel a bit like balms, as they actually feel quite hydrating on the lips despite how they look like on. I swear, my lips aren’t cracking, it’s just that the lipstick tends to sit atop the cracks, hence the (not-so-desirable) illusion. Wear time for a cream lipstick is above average. Usually creams don’t last 2-3 hours on me, but this lasted a good 3-4 hours. When the initial sheen has been wiped off — there is still a bit of staining left on the lips, even after a light snack and water in between. lorealcollectionstar3

The Shades

Barely Coral — inspired by Fan Bingbing — is a light coral, peach sorbet shade that looks beautiful in tube and on the lips. Not particularly a nude shade on me, but I find it wearable especially on bright, sunny days. I don’t know why I feel indifferent with this shade out of all the five, when it actually doesn’t look that bad on me as compared to this next one. Barely Greige — inspired by Jenny from the Block — is a sheer light beige. I was particularly excited to try this among all the shades just ‘cos I don’t think I’ve ever found a shade like this to match my skintone before. However, I think this is better off on J.Lo than on me and will leave her to rock this shade instead. For some reason, I think this washes me out. Maybe I just didn’t pair it with the right eye makeup (ain’t nobody got time to switch makeup when swatching 5 lipsticks!) . Barely Moka — inspired by Gong Li — is a brown, mocha shade that I was least excited about in this set. Whaddayknow, it turns out to be my favorite shade from the bunch (Barely Plum is only second). Fine, maybe because I’ve never thought that I could pull off brown lipstick before thinking it had the tendency to ‘mature’ anyone wearing it. Also, because brown lipsticks are soooo 90s! Well, Barely Moka changed all those feels with just one swipe. Well, two. It’s the more pigmented of the bunch, as well as the most forgiving on lip lines. Yup, Iove this. I paired it with Chanel blush in Accent and ummm, match made in heaven these two! lorealcollectionstar Barely Plum — inspired by Sonam Kapoor — is a muted pink with lilac tones. Ugh, I didn’t think I would love this… but I do! It’s not at all a nude shade on me, but it’s a lilac-toned lipstick I can actually pull off! I don’t think I’ve any shade like this in my stash save for Benefit Lollitint (which is doh, a lip tint). The shade reminds me of MAC’s Pink Nouveau, only Barely Plum is much more suited to my skintone. Barely Pink — inspired by Victoria’s Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes — is a pale baby pink. This is definitely a brightening kind of pink best paired with flushed baby pink cheeks, in my opinion. I didn’t think my skintone could pull this off but I think it looks okay on, not too chalky or ashy. But I would reserve this shade for the lighter-skinned mestizas, definitely. Hey Doutzen, I may not have your wings or your body, but I’ve got your lipstick on and I already feel half the Victoria’s Secret Angel (I only want to be because of Adam Levine).

Final Thoughts

Did I find my perfect nude? When I say nude though, I pertain to the shade that cancels out the color in my lips but must be complementary to my skintone so it doesn’t totally wash me out or make me look like I’m from the Walking Dead. The shades in this collection are beautiful, but they’re not at all nude on me. So no, I didn’t find my perfect nude or even MLBB shade. But I did, however, find a brown lipstick I may be quite in love with in Barely Moka — and if only because it’s the first brown-based lipstick I feel comfortable wearing – so be it. I also like Barely Plum, which is a lilac-tinged muted pink that’s very reminiscent of MAC Pink Nouveau, only much more suitable to my skintone. The formula could be better, though.

Any shade that caught your fancy?

The Barely Coral looks best on you, methinks!

    • August 6, 2014 / 9:29 am

Really? I dont know why I dont like LIKE it as much, though. I guess I’m not used to true coral shades lang on me! I feel like they make me too yellow? Haha! Thanks for the feedback though, Erika!

I agree, I think Barely Coral looks good on you! Interesting that they’ve released a set exclusively for Asia. Some of the ‘stars’ and their shades sound familiar in the Western market though (Doutzen Kroes in particular…)

I think, as a reader mentioned above, this is the same as the Collection Privee lipsticks that launched in the US. But then I looked for reviews and the shades do vary even if they have the same inspiration/celebrity on the tube! Confusing, actually.

Not very fond of the shades – parang nothing special naman for it to be “Asia exclusive” but Barely Plum looks nice on you 🙂 + ganda mo dito Shari!!

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:51 pm

I was expecting more morena-friendly shades, as well. Most of these are suited for very fair skintones! Aww thanks, Romz 🙂 Makeup lang yan!

Barely Coral looks interesting and different on you!!! Me likey! You look a sweet girl with that Barely Pink naman! Haha~

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:52 pm

SWEET GIRL LOVE IT! I shall wear Barely Pink more often, then! Gusto ko yan, sweet girl :)) Hahaha! Thanks Laarni!

In the US these are part of the Collection Privée and I have this shade called Julianne’s Nude that I love love love. 🙂 The packaging is different, though; the Asia version is way more luxe!!! I think Barely Coral looks really really nice on you, Shari! 😀

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:53 pm

I hope that Julianne Moore Nude was released here, I think it would suit most Filipino skin tones more than a few of the shades above 🙂 Thanks, Jaa!! I researched the Privee lipsticks and their packaging isn’t bad, are they matte? 🙂

Love Barely Pink on you. Kaka-fresh ng face! :))

Thanks, Shaunne! Actually – onga, nakakagising siya ng complexion!

Talaga?! I cant believe a lot of you guys like Barely Pink on me, di ba okay si Barely Plum?! Haha! Thanks Nix!

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:56 pm

Thanks Glenn! Another +1 for Barely Pink! 🙂

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:56 pm

      A beautiful shade, indeed 🙂

Interesting shades. I think Barely Coral looks the best, and I like the look of Plum too, but the other shades are a bit ‘meh’ for me. Are these lipsticks the same as the ones released in the US and UK, inspired by celebrities’ perfect nude? They have different packaging though which is a bit confuzzling!

CONFUSING is the right term! I researched the swatches on the lipsticks and Doutzen’s pink in this collection is quite different from the Doutzen pink in the Privee collection (launched in US & UK) so I think the shades are different, although altogether is quite the same concept. Just that the shades were probably tailor-made for each market 🙂

lovely nudes!! they all look great on you, but Barely coral and barely pink are my faves on you!
Nudes are unfortunately difficult for me because they always tend to make my complexion looking washed out..

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:59 pm

I agree. So far, Tom Ford Sable Smoke is one of my favorite nude shades 🙂 For my skintone, it’s quite hard to find a shade that doesnt wash me out altogether.

I think Barely Coral looks good on you. So gorgeous Shari 🙂

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:59 pm

Thanks, Krisella 🙂 *blush naman ako*

  11. August 6, 2014 / 5:44 pm

Hey Shari! Every color suits you!! 🙂 I find it very hard to pull off blue toned pinks.. I love the look of barely coral! 🙂

Barely Greige suits you the most! But the shades seem to suit fairer skinned people.. 🙁

    • August 7, 2014 / 1:01 pm

REALLY!? Are you kidding me, Rayray. I look like the undead. Haha. But I’ll try it out again with different makeup and see what happens! And yes, most shades seem to favor fair-skinned ladies nga. I guess it’s because they were thinking of the paper white Japanese, Koreans, Chinese more than us tan-skinned ladies when they came up with this 🙂

  13. August 6, 2014 / 10:34 pm

Love Barely Plum on you ^_^ But actually, everything looks great on you. hehehe

    • August 7, 2014 / 12:01 am

“Everything looks great on you”— why??? Haha! Of all the reviews I’ve read, you are the first who can wear every color! Amazing!!!

      • August 7, 2014 / 1:03 pm

YOU GUYS, MASYADO KAYO MABAIT! Baka maniwala na ako. Haha! But thank you @holliedamz:disqus and @wolfgirl0703:disqus — I’m blushing!! HEHE.

I beg to disagree, though! Guys, Barely Greige?! Srsly? Haha.

  14. August 7, 2014 / 4:46 am

Oh wow, I love Barely Pink! Great swatches! x

      Thanks Gaby!

INTERESTING. i wonder if this is the exact same as the Collection prive line but repackaged for the asian market? very curious about that now.

    A Beautiful Zen

    • August 7, 2014 / 1:07 pm

I researched my dear Jenn after the comments and confusion on this thread — and while they both have Doutzen’s Pink and JLo’s Greige in their collections, the shades are entirely different. Doutzen’s pink in Privee is an icy pale more blue-toned pink, and JLO’s greige isn’t even a beige, it’s a pink nude. 🙂 So while they are technically the same collection concept, the shades do vary in hopes of being more suited to each market 🙂

I actually did a review on these and J. Lo’s Nude was one of the shades I picked up. Her shade in the Privee line has a more peachy undertone. I think all of the shades look really nice on you but I agree that Barely Plum and Bare Moka do give you a little bit of an oomph 😀

  16. August 7, 2014 / 11:24 am

Barely Coral looks gorge on you!! <3 I want the matte version of these! Don't know if it's from the same line but they have the same packaging.

    • August 7, 2014 / 1:07 pm

Meron matte version? Now those, I want to try!!!

      • August 9, 2014 / 2:25 am

Merong L’Oreal Moist Matte line 🙂 Same packaging. Ang daming colors, well mga around 10? Not sure if may coral. I’ve been looking for my first coral lipstick. Ganda sana nung barely coral, pero I want my lipsticks matte.
