I Pink I’m In Love!Just when my motivation level was slowly tanking on low, even almost-empty — I receive a lovely surprise from the beautiful ladies of Maybelline Philippines. Who knew a pink lip-shaped bag stuffed with a couple of pink lipsticks as well as some brow mascaras (reserved for another entry) could instantly perk me up and temporarily stop me from wallowing deeper in my misery? *end of emo vibes, promise.* I’ve tried a few Color Sensational lipsticks from the brand before, but since I’m more partial to mattes, I haven’t gone on to exploring other shades. These four new pinks are part of the aptly named Pink Alert collection which is a new addition to the Color Sensational line. These aren’t the sheer, subdued pinks that sit on your lips unnoticed. These are strikingly bold pinks that will ring warning bells and sound off alarms both to lipstick lovers who will probably think “Love it! Wonder what that shade is…” and non-lipstick wearers who may slightly raise an eyebrow at how vividly pop-outish your lips appear. Pink lipstick fans, get ready to fork out the $$$.
The LowdownThese Maybelline Pink Alert* lipsticks are of the creamy slash buttery texture. When applied, they glide on like balms with moderate slip. I actually feel like I’m applying a nourishing lip balm when I put these on only with wham ba(l)m more pigment ma’am than the average balms I’ve tried. The finish is lightweight despite the number of swipes to get even pigmentation on the lips — although the feeling that you’re wearing lip balm is definitely there. They feel very smooth, though and not at all sticky or icky. For pigmentation, I find them of medium opacity when swatched on the arm but highly pigmented once swiped on the lips. On the arm swatches below, I used two-three layers for each swatch (except POW2 that went on more saturated than the others in one swipe). On the lips, one layer is boldly pigmented that I would probably wear it as such on most days — but for photo purposes and to really show the colors, I did two swipes for each shade below. The most important part of any lipstick for me — moisturizing feature. I have to say that despite my swatch-a-thon, my lips did not peel, crack or bleed in any way (unlike what transpired during one of my MAC swatch-a-thons). I think the 100% honey nectar ingredient in the lipsticks pulled through and left my lips looking and feeling nourished for the rest of the day. I also love how the lipsticks are very forgiving on lip lines (just see for yourself below). As for longevity, these lipsticks dry down to a not-as-sheeny finish as compared to when it’s first applied on. I wasn’t able to time how long it actually sets, but they still leave a bold color on the lips thereafter so they aren’t of the once-touched-disappears family of buttery lipstick. It took a little over 4 hours with eating in between before I noticed the lipstick totally wiped off.
Final ThoughtsTo be honest, I am wary of the blue-toned pinks especially on my (I think cos until now I am still confused regarding the warm, cool, neutral, olive lalala) warm skintone. So, POW 1 and POW 3 were the ones I reserved for last during this swatch session. I knew POW 4 would be an instant love considering my attraction to warm coral-y pinks and I was right. However, I was surprised when I found that I actually like POW 2 better than POW 4 – although just a teeny bit more. And then it was time to try on the more cool-toned shades (POW 1 and POW 3) — I think they don’t look too bad, do they? I expected to feel some sort of aversion to them after trying but I wasn’t overcome by the feeling at all. POW 1 appears to pull a bit lilac-y on me while POW 3 looks a bit like how I think MAC’s Candy Yum Yum would look on me. Overall, both wearable and not at all how I expected them to register. And speaking of register, I realized how almost true-to-color the swatches look both on the arms and on the lips. As a final note, I’m very pleased with the outcome of this second encounter with Maybelline lipsticks. They’re not at all fussy with above average color pay-off for a balmy/buttery lipstick and are even quite moisturizing. The price is set at Php 399 each (not too high a mark-up from the US retail price).
