Seeing Red

So I’ve been having a down day (week, to be more precise) – of which I would like to express in more ways than one but will save you guys the drama as I don’t want to spread any bad vibes here. Instead, I’ll divert my energy towards makeup and its feel-good effects (shallow as it may sound). My pick-me-upper of choice? A bold lip, please. Despite my natural tendency to gravitate towards pinks, no other lipstick makes me feel more confident than the good ol’ red. Which means — I’ve a reason to bust out a red lipstick currently gathering dust in my drawers. Tom Ford Crimson Noir (review here). This lipstick didn’t really impress me in terms of formula especially with its $49 price tag. However, I do like that this wears well on my perpetually dry and peeling lips. You’ll see on the photos below how very forgiving Crimson Noir is on my beyond-saving lips. Despite its not-so-unique shade, I actually don’t have a red quite like it in my stash as I usually prefer deep Hollywood reds (Viva Glam I, Cruella) over true reds.

Products I’m Currently Testing

Maybelline Fashion Brow 24H Colouring Mascara*Ack I can’t believe it!!! I’ve finally found a more reasonably priced dupe for my MAC Girl Boy brow set — and with a wand applicator that’s easier to work with! It coats the brow hairs more precisely and with just the right amount on each swipe unlike the MAC set that coats even the skin underneath, above and below the brows. I will do a full review of these Brow Mascaras ASAP! Dolly Wink Line Beat 24H Long Lasting Liner*. Ultra slim 0.1mm eyeliner, folks. Perfect for my hooded eyes that need only the slimmest flick of liner as to not cover the entire lid (sigh, times I wish I had more lid space). In terms of wetness, I don’t find it as glossy — compared to the Stila Waterproof liner — which is great. Also, I’m not sure if this is Dolly Wink’s new packaging as I’m used to the pink one or if it’s altogether a new formula. Will update you on this soon. Pixi Natural Brow Duo. In terms of brow pencils, I have been preferring this over my Majolica Majorca Brow Customize as it’s more pigmented but not too much that I’d end up having Frida Kahlo brows. It just makes filling in easier and quicker as compared to the less pigmented yet softer looking Majolica Brow Customize. The transparent brow gel at the other end is also very convenient but I have light hair at the moment so I always reach for a colored brow mascara after. Benefit They’re Real Mascara. Not entirely new as this is my second tube of this particular mascara. At first, I wasn’t impressed by it because it tends to weigh down my lashes but I realized it does a good job lengthening them — I just have to re-curl after application. The best feature of They’re Real, in my opinion, is its brush/wand. Its thin rubber bristles ensure no clumping and makes for easy application down to the roots. tom ford crimson noir lipstickred lipstick makeup asianred lips makeup asian

Final Look

For the base, I forgot to include Benefit’s Big Easy* in the photo but yes, I’m currently testing it too before I pen down my final thoughts regarding it. Another newcomer is Collection 2000’s Lasting Perfection Concealer I bought very recently (in my shade that’s always sold out!). On the cheeks, I’m wearing NARS Laguna and Chanel blush in Accent. And for the eyes, I used the shades Fresco and Truffle from my Laura Mercier Artist’s Palette. A gratuitous shot of me applying my feel-good lipstick au choix. And you know what I realized? Maybe every cent of that $49 is worth it. I love how chic~ I look holding that mahogany Tom Ford tube. I bet you didn’t even notice I had spinach lodged in between my teeth above ‘cos the lipstick stole the show. Gotcha. Also, I love how deceivingly smooth my lips look despite the major peeling session it had undergone the night before. Hmmm, Tom Ford lipsticks, I’m suddenly getting the feels for you. Such a love-hate relationship we have.

Anyway, that’s it! How about you, my friends? Does makeup make you feel better during your down days or you’re the type that gets lazy to even put makeup on?

When I get down I barely get dresses and brush my teeth, so no make up too! 😀
Sorry to hear you’re having a downer week, I’m having one too, sometimes it helps to vent and talk about it 😀

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:16 pm

Thanks Keiti. Good to hear from you again! 🙂 I missed ya here! Your comments always cheer me up 🙂

Churning it out soon, Nikki. But for now, I’ve been reaching for the Maybelline one more than my MAC one. The brush on the MAC one is just soooo ugh.

Oh Tom Ford, we still haven’t met yet. I love the Benefit They’re Real’s wand too. Really no clumping. But have you experienced any smudging after a few hours?

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:18 pm

It doesn’t smudge on me Fred! I’ve even cried with it on and wala! 🙂 It does weigh down my lashes a lot though 🙁

My Crimson Noir looks a bit more matte.. Not entirely matte but mine doesn’t seem as sheen-y as yours. And how is yout TF logo still there?! Mine is just flat now. 🙁 They’re Real’s formula is just way too wet for my lashes. And the wand just pokes my eye.. 🙁 You should try Maybelline’s the Rocket!

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:20 pm

Because I barely use RED, gurlfran :)) You know that! Hehe. My Spanish Pink = Your Crimson Noir 😉 They’re Real – i can’t quit because of the wand! I really like that you can use it horizontally AND vertically so it really reaches the hard-to-reach super short lashes 🙂 Although I agree, it weighs down my lashes too much. I just have to re-curl every time! I’ll try the Rocket, soon!!

Ahh I feel you, being having a less than stellar week myself being in and out of the flu.
And red is my go-to for pick me ups as well! I actually wore it the first chance I got after ‘recovery’! And I do love how Crimson Noir looks on you, and the spinach was no were to be seen! Lol! A good thing, now you can invest in more TF Reds! Whooooo!

Lastly, thank you for a very enjoyable post dear.. currently in Indonesia and relaxing, your post was the perfect post massage read!

Aww Bubs, thank you sooo much for the sweet words as always 🙂 I’ve been really down (like lowest of the low) the past month – been going through something but I’m feeling a bit better now. Blogging, just writing actually, and reading blogs help take my mind off it. I hope you’re feeling better now!! Sending you lots of hugs! :*

Totally in love with this red shade! I love the berry pink undertone, its so beautiful, totally the type of red I’d go after usually!

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:24 pm

Me too Shar – I usually shy away from reds but this one called out to me and I wasn’t disappointed! 🙂

  9. May 25, 2014 / 7:30 pm

There’s something about square lipstick packaging…

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:24 pm

      Hahaha, thanks Jenn!!!

  10. May 26, 2014 / 12:08 pm

I heard that TF lipsticks are spotty in terms of moisturization. Hopefully yours is on the better side! That tube is really luxe though!

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:26 pm

This one is indeed on the better side although average lang. The nude one I have, Sable Smoke, isn’t as moisturizing. Spanish Pink naman, very moisturizing. They differ talaga!

  13. May 28, 2014 / 4:18 am

BAM!! that red is a stunner. i know what you mean by ‘pick me up’ though. when its been a bad week, i’ll try and perk myself up with some new look or put a little more time into how i dress and stuff like that.

    hope the days get better!

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:28 pm

Thanks, Jenn ❤ And yes, for some reason, I turn to makeup and making myself look good (despite how shallow and superficial that sounds) when I want a perk-me-up. I do feel a bit better temporarily 🙂

  14. May 31, 2014 / 9:16 pm

Oooh yes, been hearing good reviews on the Benefit one!

  15. May 31, 2014 / 9:17 pm

Exactly! 🙂 And thank you Stacey!

  16. May 31, 2014 / 9:18 pm

It’s actually a brow mascara, Sabrina! 🙂 And it’s a US release but the Maybelline team here in the Philippines pushes to bring it here!

  17. May 31, 2014 / 9:25 pm

Thank you so much, Divya!! ❤

  18. June 3, 2014 / 8:07 am
