High on Highlighters

I used to think highlighter = shimmerbomb so for a huge chunk of my life, I’ve missed out on the glory of highlighters. I had NARS Albatross for the looongest time, but never got around to abusing it because when I used it the first time, I felt it was too glowy that it translated too much to ‘greasy’ and ‘oily’. I had no idea I used the wrong brush (dense kabuki brush! *slaps forehead*) to apply it which left me with a little too much glow than I wanted. For this entry, I’ll be sharing a few highlighters and complexion powders in my stash that I’ve finally figured out how to apply properly hence giving me that much-coveted glow without looking like an oil slick.high2b

MAC Whisper of Gilt

A pearly champagne metallic that’s the frostiest highlighter in the bunch. When I say shimmerbomb, this is the closest in my stash I can think of. I have to use this with a light hand, else it can emphasize those pores we all try to hide. The shade, though, is very pretty and when applied properly really gives off a perceptible glow. A glow that you can put your finger on.

NARS Albatross

Albatross is a cool-toned ivory with a light golden sheen. Again, this gives off a detectable glow, same as Whisper of Gilt without the frosty finish. The sheen is noticeably yellow/golden upon closer inspection so I’m not sure how this would look on very pale girls. But for medium-dark skintones, I believe this highlighter is a hit. It has no glitter particles at all so no pore-emphasizing features here.

Hourglass Incandescent Light

Incandescent Light (similar here) is a soft nude with a slightly pink base and the slightest touch of peach. This has the tiniest bit of microshimmer that doesn’t emphasize pores but gives off an undetectable glow. As compared to the first two above, Incandescent is much much more subtle, almost imperceptible. I love the effect of this but if I had to purchase it individually for $43? I would be looking for a dupe instead (insert Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight here). high3

Hourglass Dim Light

Although not a highlighter and more of a finishing powder, I included Dim Light because for some reason when I use it right, it leaves my skin ‘glowing’ in a non-glowy way. It’s more complexion-perfecting, to be exact. In the swatches, it looks like a typical face powder but it has blurring features with a very non-powdery finish.

Hourglass Mood Light

Mood Light is a soft sheer lavender with an illuminating sheen. It has a pale pink undertone that is said to mimic a romantic evening glow. On my yellow-undertoned skin, it has a subtle brightening, illuminating effect that can’t be detected. The beautiful powder sinks into the skin without looking at all powdery (a feature I love about these Hourglass powders!).

Burberry Nude Radiance

Saved the best for last! My favorite highlighter to date – Burberry Nude Radiance. Um, just check out the almost obliterated embossing on the thing. This is a super soft, creamy powder that plainly looks just white – but has the slightest luminosity that can barely be seen in sunlight. It has absolutely no shimmer particles but gives off a beautiful cool-toned glow that looks so so natural. I swear, whenever I wear this – I always get “you have such beautiful skin!” comments. No fail! If I were to repurchase any highlighter in this list, it would be this. Full review with photos soon!

Wow girl, you’ve got QUITE A COLLECTION there! I do like highlighters, but it’s not something I “collect.” I really love Chanel Poudre Signee de Chanel for highlighter, and Guerlain Meteorites (current fav is still Crazy Meteorites) for some overall brightening!

Still not liking the whole highlighter thing. There’s probably something wrong with me. Haha

Hi Shari, I absolutely love posts like this as a highlighter junkie!! Your photos are flawless too!! As a pale girl my faves are the Kevyn Aucoin and Mac Lightscapade which just got re-released. That Burberry highlight is stunning!!

So… how do you apply these “properly”? I’m not sure I have the right brushes haha

Depending on the pigmentation of the highlighter and the look you’re going for, a fan brush, duo fiber brush, or small tapered brush are some brushes that you can use to apply highlighter 🙂 if you don’t have these, fines work nicely too–Just make sure they’re clean!

I was hesitant to use them before, but have grown to love them after I learned where and how to apply them. I use my Mary-Lou Manizer and the Urban Decay Baked Bronzer in “Baked”. 🙂

I only have 2 highlighter products, the hourglass palette and a cheek color from Za (June Bride 05). The latter looks a lot like your swatch of nars albatross but I haven’t seen both of them side by side.

Wow, you sure have tried a lot!
My favorite highlighter in powder form is Guerlain Meteorites and Paul & Joe pressed powder in Vanilla. Both work on pale skin so well giving natural glow and brightening effects. 🙂

I have a few too in my stash. But most of the time i use the UD Naked Flushed highlighter. 😀 Will it be too late to still get the Hourglass Ambient Palette? 😀

You can find it at sephora (online only) and the hourglass website! I gotmine crumbthe sephorawebsite. Space nk might have it for those that are in England. I think they’re making it into a permanent release but it is $10 usd more than I remember them selling it for previously. ..

This post reminded me that I do not have a highlighter! I only have Benefit’s Watts Up and I don’t even use it. I wanna try Hourglass’ Dim Light, though. 🙂

The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder is hands down my favorite. Haven’t touched my other highlighters since using the palette. I love it so much I would marry it if I could.

I love Luminous Light to highlight. But if I want just a glowy sheen to my face, Diffused Light is perfect for the job!

On a side note, have you tried Anastasia’s Dipbrow Pomade? Seems so similar to MAC Veluxe Brow Gel Creme which I know you love!

Come to think of it, I don’t own a highlighter. For a little dewy effect though, sometimes I use my white shimmery eyeshadow or a lip gloss. Can you suggest though a cheaper alternative because I really want to try a highlighter after seeing those Koreans in Boracay. They sure have glowing skin!

Great roundup! So many lovely highlighters. Hourglass Dim Light is one of my faves! my skin is quite fair, so I use it as a very a natural bronzer during the Wintertime and as a subtle highlight in summer 🙂

Ahhh I love highlighters. I can’t help it! I don’t even use them regularly anymore, but I am like a moth to the flame/glow~ I don’t use Mood Light to highlight, though. All over powdah siya for me.

I have a few highlighters, but it’s the makeup item I hardly reach for! Because of that realization, I’ve managed to stop going crazy about them 🙂 The few I have, I think, will last me a lifetime. Haha!
