Pixi in Manila!
If there’s one cult UK makeup brand I’ve been dying to get a hold of for a long time now, you bet your green hornets it’s PIXI. Raved about by so many UK beauty bloggers, the Lisa Eldridge and many other influential enablers in my life — I’ve always been wishing for it to at least be brought here by online makeup retailers.
Lo and behold – my countless egg offerings have not been put to waste (thanks, Makeup Gods!) because Glamourbox Philippines has officially launched PIXI here in the Philippines a few days ago! (BRB, I’ll just gather some more eggs to say my thanks.)
I am quite the sucker for brand history (even if I don’t include it in my reviews). I love reading about how a brand came into existence as well as their motivation behind all of it. Pixi’s story started when Petra Strand (a Swedish makeup artist for 20 years now), experienced firsthand that as a working woman and mom, she found herself scrambling to look fresh, awake and put together all in under 5 minutes! Sound familiar? Yes? No… Less than 5 minutes, you say?
A simple observation that led to a beauty epiphany. Pixi doesn’t promise anything earth-shattering, mind-blowing or mountain-moving. Just a simple, makeup to wakeup philosophy for moms, working women, students – all ladies from all ages that are always on-the-go. I’m beginning to sound like an advertisement so I’ll stop here! Haha.
Here are a few Pixi best-sellers that were part of the goody bag I got from attending the launch (although I got there way too late that I was way too embarrassed to even show up at all) and some first impressions.
Pixi Flawless & Poreless
A tinted primer that goes on transparent. Feels more like a moisturizer than a primer. My hesitance to use primers isn’t a secret but I’m willing to give this one a try. I actually did already and it didn’t feel silicone-y as I would’ve expected it. Not too mattifying, either so it may not suit those who are looking for that completely matte finish. More thoughts on this, soon.
Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red
A hydrating tinted balm that goes on opaque in one swipe. Buildable color, lightweight feel. I’ve always loved tinted balms, but the ones I’ve tried are quite patchy and too sheer for my liking. This one goes on almost like lipstick if it weren’t for the balmy texture, which you wouldn’t really feel as it’s so lightweight. Instant love.
Eye Bright Liner in Nude
A waterproof inner rim liner designed to brighten the eyes. A secret trick to looking more awake. Excited to try this one out – haven’t yet but will do soon. I’ve never owned a nude liner before but I have worn (like almost everyday, my gosh slap me now) white liner on my lower waterline when I was in High School to fake looking bright-eyed and awake. Why hadn’t I discovered Youtube gurus and beauty blogs then?
Natural Brow Duo
Can I say genius? A slanted eyebrow pencil on one end, a brow gel on the other. The shade of the pencil looks like a good shade match for my ash brown hair at the moment. The brow gel has a small applicator which is perfect for avoiding the scary Barbie-esque eyebrows I always get when using the MAC Brow Gel I have now.
Endless Silky Eye Pen in Black Noir
Super creamy eyeliner that doesn’t budge once set. Can be used on the waterline, I’ve been told. Till now, I still have not found the eyeliner pencil that can stay on my waterline for longer than an hour without fading or smudging. The closest was the Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl but it melted easily and didn’t stay smudge-free for more than 4 hours. I sincerely hope that Pixi can last longer and resist smudging and smearing more.
Initial ThoughtsI’ve been road-testing these babies for the past days since I’ve gotten hold of them, will be churning out individual reviews as soon as I can. So far, my favorites would have to be the Tinted Brilliance Balm, Eye Bright Liner and the Brow Duo. I’m eyeing on some future purchases such as the Lid Last Shadow Pens (cream shadows!) and the All-Over Magic Brightening highlighter. Also, PIXI is cruelty-free. I’ve been quite conscious about this issue (animal testing and the many other cruelties that go with it) after reading about it from a staunch advocate, Carina. Although I would love to go 100% cruelty-free, quite a huge amount of brands on my vanity aren’t. What I can do moving forward, however, is to think twice (or three, four, a hundred times over!) before purchasing a product from a non-CF brand. I’ve recently ended my “no-buy” and during my first ‘shopping’ trip, I have passed on a few items after knowing the parent company of the brand isn’t cruelty-free. So yes, I can’t commit 100% to the advocacy, but I’m slowly being more conscious of my choices.
PIXI can be found in Glamourbox Philippines‘ online shop.
