The Rise of the Shine Lipsticks

I don’t think I’ve ever fully warmed up to Shine lipsticks. These are hybrid lip products that combine the consistency of a cream lipstick with the hydration of a balm and the shine of a gloss. They tend to be very moisturizing and smoothing as compared to the other types of lipsticks like satin, matte, cream. Some examples of these hybrids are Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, Tom Ford Lip Color Shine and YSL Rouge Volupte Shine. I only have one high-end Shine which is Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Monte Carlo. I think it’s bollocks paying for so much when in reality, it feels like buying just a tinted lip balm for the same price of the more pigmented, long-lasting options. So, I am pleasantly surprised to receive these Revlon Shine lipsticks, definitely a more affordable buy if you’re interested in trying out Shine lipsticks. 2bThe four shades of Revlon Super Lustrous Shine lipsticks I received are Lover’s Coral, Rich Girl Red, Pink Cloud and Kissable Pink. Swatches and all yum yum after the jump →

Shine lipsticks are super sheer, like 20% opacity in Photoshop terms. In the photo above, you may mistake them as the regular Super Lustrous lipsticks that are the more pigmented and regular version of the Shines. I actually thought that I got the Super Lustrous version until I swatched these and did a double take on the packaging label. As compared to the ever-famed Revlon Lip Butters, these are less creamier (less melty) and much shinier. They glide smoothly and easily on the lips without the need of any mirror, which I can’t do with the Lip Butters as they’re more pigmented and ‘messier’ to apply. And as far as Shine lipsticks go, they are perfectly sheer so for them to really show on my lips, I need about 3-4 swipes. 4 These are swatched 2-3x. I love that they shine without any shimmer at all. Rich Girl Red is the most pigmented of the four. Pink Cloud is my least favorite because it borders on frosty. I like Lover’s Coral most because it’s the best shade for my skintone (methinks) and most forgiving on my lips. 0

FINAL THOUGHTS

I think these Revlon Super Lustrous Shines are great as far as Shine formulas go. Comparing it to Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, these feel almost the same, slightly more lightweight and less pigmented but feels comfortable just the same. With the exception of Pink Cloud, I like the three shades and how they apply on the lips. Pink Cloud really accentuates dryness and lip lines. They’re not long-wearing at all, though, which is to be expected of any Shine lipsticks. These are also more moisturizing than most lipsticks I’ve tried, too. I could compare the moisturizing factor of these to the Chanel one I have (except Pink Cloud which despite feels moisturizing, shows up badly on my lips). Overall, I would recommend these for those who are searching for a lipstick to wear everyday for work or for school, just to give you a brighter boost without looking too overdone or totally made up.

Like rouge coco shine!! Oh my, i’ve never used a revlon lipstick before, I’ve never tried ANY of them believe it OR NOT! I don’t like my lipsticks opaque and heavy, my lips are a bit dry all the time and I need something buildable and with more slip. I really like Kissable pink a lot! All the shades are beautiful on you though!

I’m not particularly fond of shiny lipsticks but I think out of the four, the lover’s coral look great on you. And if given a chance, it’s the same shade that I’d get for myself.

And I was thinking about doing a similar post, but with my Revlon Mattes. Haha anyway, not really a fan of these lippies. I prefer matte or satin finishes. Looks good on you though 🙂

Um, I love these!! I love a sheer lipstick and I’m not a huge Revlon Lip Butter fan because I think they’re too pigmented and too…I don’t know, I just don’t dig the way they feel on my lips. Lover’s Coral is perfection on you and now you’ve forced me to add it to my ever burgeoning beauty wish list at Pinterest! 🙂
