Used and Abused

I know I have consumerist tendencies, that constant ‘oooh so pretty, must buy it cos y’know.. YOLO’ voice in my head, which I’ve been questioned and even criticized (through email and my ask form) one too many times now. I do feel bad that I project this kind of image because I don’t want young readers (if there are and I think there are a few) especially to feel the need to buy anything unnecessary in their lives. Especially that desire to keep up with the newest and the latest. Shocks, please don’t think I’m pushing for that. I admit I have an irrational obsession with pretty shiny things but I’m not advocating excessiveness in any way. So with this post, (which I hope to have a series of) I hope to counter that buy buy buykeep up with the new notion others think of this blog. I aim to champion use use use, finish up, empty, go for complete pan porn instead! Of course, I can’t completely eliminate featuring new products, but I’m hoping to find a balance where I’m using more products up than I’m buying new ones.
For bases, I realized my most reached for products are — Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer for most days where I need to tone down on the redness and blemishes but don’t want foundation and Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation for when I need a full-on makeup look. a3 a4 The Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner in Black Ink was great at first, but after three months, it just wasn’t working as well as it did during the start. Half has already dried up and it even smudges on me already. I should have gone with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack instead because my Fluidline Gel browcreme is still going strong, despite how many months now (I bought both at around the same time). It did get a lot of love at the start, though. Don’t you just love pan porn? ‘Cos I do, I do, I do, oooh. My NARS Laguna has definitely been abused, for good reason. It’s so far been the only contour powder that works with my medium yellow-undertone Asian skintone, without looking muddy or orangey. The MAC Fluidline Browcreme is an eyebrow favorite and staple that I wish I had hoarded back when it was available. I don’t use it everyday as I’m saving it for special occasions only. It is my key for full-looking, high-def brows. a5c The LORAC Pro is officially my workhorse eyeshadow palette. I reach for it subconsciously when I’m in a hurry to head out but still want to do eyes. The shade with the most significant dip is Pewter and some slight dips on Taupe, Mauve, Lt. Bronze and Champagne (in no particular order). I love the half-matte, half-shimmer allocation plus the pigmentation is superb. Only problem would be the fallout. But all in all, a definite winner. For someone who’s new to makeup, I would recommend this for a first basic eyeshadow palette (over the UD Nakeds). Lastly, I have a few bottles of perfume which I switch to and from easily that I didn’t think I’d be using up a scent so fast as I did See by Chloe. It’s not what you think, though. While I do love the not-too-sweet, subtle scent, the longevity is just.. not there. I don’t think it lasts even two hours on me. So when using this, I always bring it with me in my bag and spritz all day round. I’m on a current mission to finish it up (and won’t repurchase).

Would love to know your most used and abused products!

I’m so sorry to hear about your Black Ink, Shari! I’ve had mine for about a year now. It’s beginning to dry out a little, but I think it might still hang in there for another while. That Lorac palette does look really good! I don’t really reach for big palettes, so I don’t tend to want any nowadays. Still, if people keep talking about it I might cave in 😉

Aww I really wish my Black Ink would have lasted about a year without drying up! 🙁 I really liked it at first. And hmmm, the Lorac Pro palette is a good basic eyeshadow find if you haven’t dabbled into others yet. With your collection, though, I doubt it’ll wow you. 🙂

I have their mineral foundation and I find it a real gem!

Oddly, I LOVE the look of the Lorac Pro Palette, and I bought one a few months ago… but I have never used it or even swatched it. I don’t know what it is. Inspired by your post here to use use use, I’m going to wear my Lorac palette today!! 🙂

    • November 15, 2013 / 9:27 pm

Whhuuuut?! How come Krystalove!? I wanna see a look right now!! Haha. Excited for your Lorac Pro opening and first impressions!

      • November 15, 2013 / 11:54 pm

Haha, even when I commented that I would use it, I still forgot to use it! I don’t know what it is, I just never think to grab it. I’ve just put it on my vanity so I see it when I do my makeup 😉

Honestly, I don’t think you’re being excessive at all. If you want it and you can afford it, then go for it! But if you’re just pushing and almost emptying your savings account just for the sake of getting the latest and the newest, then that’s when it’s wrong. Meh, I got so much feels for this it’s just wrong hahaha.
Anyway, glad you love Lorac Pro. I ordered mine a few weeks ago and is set to arrive this November. I can’t wait!! :))

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:24 pm

Thanks for having my back, V! Appreciate it. 🙂 Oh yess, I cant wait for your Lorac Pro first impressions and final thoughts! I’m sure you’ll love it (hopefully!!!).

My NARS Laguna Bronzer looked just like yours, with a little bit of pan visible, until someone knocked it off the table and it shattered all over the floor 🙁

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:25 pm

Aww boo! At least it got a lot of love before it shattered.. but still 😐 I hate when that happens! 🙁 Did you try the alcohol trick to put it back together?

Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who has that consumerist tendencies. And it’s really hard to explain to people why you need to have that item,. Hehe.. In my case naman, i have to justify my purchases to my co-workers because they think i have too much lipsticks already. They can’t see the difference between light pink, purplish pink, fuchsia pink, matte pink, glossy pink.. Hihi. That’s how I describe it and it’s still just pink to them. 🙂

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:27 pm

Exactly! Which is why I started this blog because I didnt think I could find a friend who can ‘understand’ the different hues of pink and red lipsticks, peach/pink blushes, lalala. Kaya I appreciate your input here parati, dear! Thanks for always stopping by and contributing to all these kakikayan discussions! I truly appreciate it Ruselle!

I think the LM Tinted Moisturizer is just for when we have good skin days and dont need a lot of covering. For me, I treat it more as a skincare product than a makeup one, which is why I can see why it’s overlooked by most girls (simply no coverage at all!).

I wish I had gotten macs brow cream as well … 🙁

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:29 pm

Aww, baka they’ll repromote it in a future collection naman (sana!) 🙂

  8. November 13, 2013 / 12:29 pm

I agree with Victoria! There’s nothing wrong with having an appreciation for pretty, shiny things! If you can afford the latest and greatest, go for it! I don’t think you should have to justify it to anyone. It’s not like you’re spending your money on crack or anything like that (although sometimes it can seem just as addictive!)

I loooove my Lorac Pro as well! I got it before my NAKED2 and it became such a disappointment compared to Lorac Pro. I really hope you can do a review on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and NARS Laguna. I really want a honest to God opinion on those before I purchase them.

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:34 pm

Hi Raven! Here’s my two cents on LM TM and NARS Laguna : I think you can only really appreciate Laura Tinted Moisturizer if you have great skin to begin with. For me, coverage is almost none especially when I have blemishes I need covering up or pimples here and there. My redness isn’t all that covered, too. I see it more as a skincare item, the moisturizer part. Also, despite having the oil-free variant, it’s not as oil-free as I’d expected. I tested it without loose powder on top and I easily oil up (I guess it’s very hydrating?). If you do want a tinted moisturizer though, I’d recommend NARS’. A bit more coverage, less oily and lasts longer. About NARS Laguna naman, I say try it on the counter and see if it’s a good contour shade for your skin tone, if it is, I’d recommend it!

Pan porn… that’s new to my ears (eyes?). Hahaha. But I get more ‘affected’ with makeup photos when I see the pan. My brain goes…. “I see pan, it must be good, I think I’d buy it.” The photo won’t even have to come with words.

    • November 16, 2013 / 2:38 pm

Kung may food porn, may PAN PORN rin! LOOOVE pan porn, too. I agree about no words necessary for it. That’s my aim for this series – to have lots and lots of pan porn to share!

LOL-ing at the first sentence of this post! I’m the exact same way. I don’t know why and how I developed it, but when it comes to makeup that I like, I just simply *must* have it. Makes me feel bad sometimes since I’m not paying for my own credit card bills, but I also have this voice inside my head that goes “BUY ALL THE MAKEUP!!!!!! YOLO!!!!” every time I’m at the mall.. or online shopping. 😐

Can’t believe people give you grief for buying luxury items. I know some people don’t, um… approve of my spending, but I haven’t gotten an outright remark on it, to my face (or I guess, inbox). Anyway, thanks for this! I might do it 😀

  13. November 15, 2013 / 1:04 pm

oooo ooo this is a good idea. 🙂 i would love to do a post like this (someday) if you don’t mind!

  14. November 16, 2013 / 6:42 pm

I’ve never tried the MAC browcreme! I’ll give it a test next time i’m at the counter. 🙂 I want to get Laguna too but it might be too dark for my complexion. I’ll wait until I can swatch it somewhere!

(oh and don’t you listen to anyone send you nasty e-mails. I don’t get why people target bloggers in general like this.. It’s so easy to hide behind a screen.. And you’re so brave to show off everything you like and love! :))

hi Shari, love this post. I had the same experience with the bobbi brown liner, dried up sooner than expected. I tried guerlain liquid eyeliner but threw it away halfway because it kept smudging and smearing all over! still in search for the perfect eyeliner. So far my shu uemura gel liner tugs at the lids, but the k palette 1 day tattoo seems to be ok.
